I bought Sarah a Hogwart’s Special Edition iPod last year for her November birthday, and at the same time I treated myself to the U2 Edition.
Tonight, her much loved iPod bit the dust. I tried everything short of mouth-to-mouth, but it has given up the ghost.
The funeral will be tomorrow at noon. It didn’t even make it a full year!
Not cool, Apple! Grrrrrr.
Being the good mother that I am, I quickly gave her my iPod – flashed with her music of course - and then pre-ordered the new Black 30GB Zune from Amazon for myself!

I know that Zune is the new kid in town, and I know that it may be ages (if ever) before manufacturer’s start to embrace it the way that they have the iPod. But I am ready for a change.
I guess I had better start catching up on all things Zune.
November 14th is the ship date and I paid for overnight shipping. The countdown begins…
Here is proof that it wasn’t his ticker:

No, Judie. Say it ain’t so! iPods don’t die. They just go to the Big Apple in the sky.

“iPods don’t die. They just go to the Big Apple in the sky.”
Ha! They can at least wait until their first birthday before doing so!

Was it the battery? I thought you could get it replace by Apple for something like $59. I also seen replacement batteries on the net. If its the battery maybe its fixable. Unless its another issue all together.

Nzo, it is not the battery – there is definitely still a charge. The screen is grayed out and when a reset is done you can see a partial apple logo, and then it goes to a pixellated and splotchy picture of a sick iPod. I can’t force it into disk mode…so based on the info at Apple, it looks to be a hardware issue.

I got clear shots of the screen and have added them to the post. Enjoy.

If you cant force it into disk mode, maybe the hard drive decided to quit working? Those hard drives are tiny and I dont think you can buy them through normal channels.

Oh, also its not fun getting a iPod open to get at the guts.

Sarah spent the afternoon doing an “autopsy” on her iPod. There is no telling what exactly went wrong, but it sure is fun seeing how they cram the guts in such tiny spaces.

Oh my god. Did you just dissasemble an iPod still under warrantee? If it was less than a year old, they would have given you a brand new one!

Well, it was actually purchased in early October and put into a closet until her November birthday, but YES, we sure did…and it was fun!
