Coolness: I Have Found A Podcast That I Am Willing to Listen To!

Posted on 30 October 2006 by

I have a confession: I don’t particularly like Podcasts.

You could blame it on the fact that I was raised on TV, not the radio. Or you could blame it on the fact that the few I have listened to were so poorly done, so amateurish, and just so lame that they soured me on the genre.

Disclaimer: I’m sure that there must be some really good ones out there, I just quit looking.

It’s not that I don’t want to listen to someone talk about something I am interested in, it’s that I don’t have the patience to search through the poorly produced, unentertaining drivel while I search for the sonic gems. There…I said it!

Well, I finally found one that I like: The Cell Phone Junkie!

I got an email from the show’s host and producer, Mickey Papillon. It read, “I wanted to let you know about my site and weekly podcast that I feel compliments the stuff that you do very nicely.  The site is http://www.thecellphonejunkie.com/ and the show is called, you guessed it, The Cell Phone Junkie.  My passion and focus is on the mobile phone industry, so there is obviously an overlap a little bit with the items you talk about and the phone stuff I cover.  I am on show #23 right now and have a ton of fun doing it!  Give it a listen when you have a chance sometime and let me know what you think!

So I listened, and I like it!

Mickey has a voice that doesn’t grate on me (important!!), and I didn’t hear a single awkward “uhhh” or otherwise uncomfortable silence during the show.

Instead, I heard him and a guest having what sounded like a comfortable conversation between friends as they followed a list of topics and gave entertaining banter about their thoughts on the subject matter.

So there’s my podcast recommendation for the day (week/month…).

Do you have a favorite? I’d love to hear about it…I might even give it your suggestion a try. ;-)

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

Judie, I will bet you have a great voice so give it a try. I like Commonwealth Club of CA for a wealth of great speakers: http://www.commonwealthclub.org/broadcast/index.php#podcast. Also BBC 1xtra http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/podcast/ tends to be ahead of music trends and therefore worth a listen. Any pdcast from BBC is worth a listen because that nation loves puns…this most sober business or intl news casts can be littered with them.

Ha! You can hear my voice (and see me in action) on this video review – tell me I don’t have a twang. ;-)

I listen to the Engadget podcast, and I really like it. They cover a lot of interesting topics and issues.

without a doubt… Mobility Today has the best Podcast around!

Well done, like the “twang” bc we don’t hear it much in Kaleeforneeaa. Judie, podcast, you could start with quarterly forecasting or a consumer elec showcast.

Oooh, I just realized that the “I might even give it a try” had been misinterpreted! I meant I might give “it”, meaning your podcast recommendations a try! Ha! ;-)

I’m not planning on doing podcasts at this time, but I might do some more video reviews – if the right item comes along that would do well as one. :-D

I too cannot be bothered to hunt down the podcasts that are any good, and since I’ve stopped commuting I rarely want to sit down and listen to something that doesn’t come with moving pictures to entertain me! What I have found really enjoyable is DLTV, (http://www.dl.tv/)… it’s a podcast video! Genius! You can watch it (for free!!) on your video ipod, or on any other device that plays a video. Worth checking out, good mix of tech, gadgets, gaming and industry gossip!

T39, I hadn’t even thought about podcast video, that might be very good to watchl! I’ll have to check your link. :-)

I agree the BBC blogs are generally very good – particularly those based on Radio 4 programmes (for example From Our Own Correspondent – a world class programme whatever your political views) – also the Nikonians podcasts are very good if you are in to photography and particularly Nikon gear. – regards from flub
