Now It’s Time For a Survey…& Another Give-Away

Posted on 16 November 2006 by

**Update – this give-away is now closed. Elodie is the winner. Thanks for participating, and keep your eyes peeled. New contests and give-aways will be coming soon!

I am in the process of installing a Mobihand/Gear Diary software and accessory store to this site, and I need some input from you all.

Mobihand wants to upgrade the compatibility data that drives this accessory store.  Currently device compatibility is set for a relatively small subset of available devices like Treo’s, the Moto Q, and some IPAQs. There are a lot of accessories in the store such as Bluetooth headsets and memory cards which are fairly standard and compatible with a large number of devices.  But, if the compatibility is not manually set, then my customers will get the dreaded “sorry, no accessories available for your device” message. Not cool!

So I’m taking a poll in order to compile a list of my readers’ most “important” devices.  What devices do you feel are the currently the most popular?  I’d like to know your top three. Obviously this is a non-scientific approach, but the goal is to make things better for Gear Diary shoppers.

blueant_bluesonic_bluetooth_portable_speakers_01

I appreciate the help, so I will pick a random poll-taker and give them the BlueAnt Wireless Bluesonic Bluetooth Portable Speakers I recently reviewed for Pocketnow.com (value $149). I’ll keep the poll open until 3:30 US Central Standard Time on November 25th. This will be the same time the Celebrity’s Devices Guessing Game ends, so be sure to enter that contest, too! ;-)

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

    You say:
“So I’m taking a poll in order to compile a list of my readers’ most “important” devices. What devices do you feel are the currently the most popular?”

Those seem to me to be two separate questions: my most important devices, and what devices I feel are currently the most popular.

    To answer the first:
    1) Motion LE1600 Tablet PC
    2) Samsung T-509 Cell Phone
    3) Plantronics 590A Bluetooth Headset

    To answer the second:
    1) iPod (duh)
    2) Motorola RAZR
    3) Dell/IBM/HP/Whatever Laptop

Ha! Fair enough – thanks for answering. :-)

  • tiburongirl04

I’m not sure if one of my choices are most important but I couldn’t live without it!

    1) iPod
    2) Alienware Sentia Laptop
    3) Motorola SLVR
    4) My trusty Tapwave Zodiac :)

  • http://www.geardiary.com Judie

    That’s all that matters – thanks! Alienware, huh…lucky!! :-D

  • MitchellO

Well for me this would be:

    1. Dell Inspiron 710m Laptop
    2. Nokia N73 Smartphone (with Profimail for email)
    3. My Windows Media Center PC

Following those would be my Nokia CK-1W Bluetooth CarKit and my 8GB iPod nano.

  • T39andcounting

    1. Treo 650
    2. ThinkPad T41
    3. Whatever I buy/upgrade to when the contract on my Treo finishes in the new year, (I’ll be looking for some suggestions Judie!!)

  • Lex

Always on the /trailing\ edge of technology, I’m using an iPAQ 2215, just ordered an hx2490 and my trusty Motorola v262 dumbphone. :-)

  • surfsmurf

    My favourite devices are

    1) My iPod
    2) My MacBook
    and
    3) My Nokia N73 mobile phone

If my MacBook can’t come I’ll bring my Nokia 770 instead.

  • mcsouth

Just like Lex, I am not on the cutting edge of the gadget technology curve – I live vicariously through you, Judie!

For the overall general picture, I would have to list these items:
    1. iPod
    2. Palm Treo, in its many flavours
    3. Bluetooth headsets

….and of course, that is strictly based on my highly unscientific review of what I see people walking around with.

For me, the list is quite different:
    1. iPaq 4150 (told you I was behind the curve!)
    2. Fujitsu S7020D (love this unit, even if it isn’t Core Duo/2)
    3. (POS) Motorola V551 phone (am trying desperately to upgrade to Smartphone, but since it is a work phone, they are pretty limiting in what they will let me order…..)

  • http://www.geardiary.com Judie

Thanks y’all!! I really appreciate your answers! :-D

  • WebPastor

Judie, I’ll reply with what’s most important and popular with me… YMMV
    1. iPod (75% Audible books 25% music)
    2. iPAQ 4155 (repaired, resuscitated, revived, and prayed over for a long time now!)
    3. tie for 3rd… HP notebook and Blackberry 7280 (just not able to replace the iPAQ)
Keep up the great work. It’s quite a bright spot in my day! :-)

  • http://www.geardiary.com Judie

Thanks WebPastor – that type of feedback makes my crazy hours worthwhile. :-)

  • cjhpe

    Blackberry 8703e
Dell latitude 400 laptop (replacing soon)
    Motorola Razr

  • dckiwi

While I’m here… the devices I used on a daily basis include:

    T-mo Dash
    Dell Latitude D820
    5.5 gen iPod

In terms of accessories, cases would have to be my biggest requirement. I case everything, and then put it all in my gear bag (Burton Conceal).

    HTH.

    Regards,

    Robbie.

  • fishgal

    My top three are:

    1. Cingular 8125
    2. Ipod Nano
    3. Canon 20D :)

  • perryman

I think you’ve got to put the various iPods at the top of the list. Beyond that, if I can combine all Windows Mobile devices, I’ll list them as second. Otherwise, I’d put the Treo 7xxx series second and probably the HTC Apache devices (Sprint PPC-6700 and Verizon XV-6700) as third. I think some of the UMPCs, like the Samsung Q1 and TabletKiosk eo are starting to get fairly popular as well.

  • rsnavin

    Here You Go :

    1. Dopod 838 Pro
    2. iPod
    3. MacBook Pro

    All the best!

    1. Blackberry (any and all variations)
    2. Treo (any and all variations)
    3. RAZRs (any and all variations)

  • Rico3201

    1. iPod 30GB video

    2. Treo 650

    3. iMac

  • curious

    1. Treo 700 (p&w)
    2. Treo 650
    3. Tmobile Dash (new but i think it will rise in popularity quickly)

  • http://www.woofytexan.com woofytexan

    My most important:
    1. Treo 700p
    2. Sandisk Titanium 2G USB stick
    3. iPod

    Most popular:
    1. iPod
    2. current thinphone with best market ad (Razr, Katana, etc)
    3. Laptops for mobile computing (HP, Dell, or Apple)

  • parelle

    My top three are:

    1. Dell Axim 51v
    2. Sony Vaio Laptop
    3. … I don’t actually have a third. Perhaps Mac accessories, they’re quite hard to find and tech happy people are more likely to have them?

I admit that I find it interesting that many people here (like myself) don’t list/don’t have IPods.

  • dmccarty

    Let’s see, my 3 most important devices…

Well, call me a 21st Century luddite. I have several laptops that I’m always using here and there, but the three things I carry around everywhere with me are:
    1. Palm Vx (yeah, I know I know…but it just won’t stop working!)
    2. Nokia 8260, specially modded in Thailand with red LED’s to match the car :-)
(it’s also old, but I like a phone that’s just a phone, and it won’t quit working either!)
    3. A black Moleskine notebook, and I’m close to running out of pages for 2006

Honorable mention goes to my Staedtler drafting pens that lay down such a nice line of ink. And a Muvo MP3 player, though I haven’t been using it very much lately.

  • TinTin

    Hi Judie,
I think the most popular devices are (not in that order)

    - Any core duo laptop with widescreen
    - Ipod Nano
    - Pocket PCs (Windows mobile 5 phones like Treo 650, Wizard, HTC Hermes / Dopod 838 Pro)

I feel the most important devices( the upcoming ones in popular list are )

    - Core 2 duo laptops
    - Microsoft Zune
    - UMPC like Samsung Q1 and Sony Vaio UX

I would like to know your opinion about this though.

P.S: Did I say a big THANK YOU for your give away and a GREAT Site

  • WonderDawg

    My top three:
    Palm Treo 650
    Motorola Q Smartphone
    iMac 20″ G5

    As for popular:
    Anything Apple, especially iPods
Palm Treos – expecting the 680′s to be a hit
And the big buzz on Playstation 3 and Wii

As for what’s lurking underneath the surface, I am quite smitten with the Target Gift Cards – collectable items indeed.

Have a great Thanksgiving and many thanks for a great site and the link backs to my blog.

“I am quite smitten with the Target Gift Cards – collectable items indeed.”

I gave Grabb’s son the one with the frog & sticky tongue…he was utterly fascinated! I love Target gift cards, especially ones that still have money left on them, because it is one of my favorite stores! ;-) :-D

  • jlhorng

Most important devices for me are:

    1. iPAQ (All my personal info, schedule, contact, music, photos, and ebooks are stored in this device. It goes with me everywhere I go to.)
    2. Nokia Cell phone 6030 (No suprise, calling and receiving calls is all I concern)
    3. Casio Digital watch (Hey, I need to know what time and date it is now)

    Most popular:

    1. iPod (although I don’t have it)
    2. Motorola Razr (I can see it everywhere)
    3. Notebook (I have one but it was 8 years old. Maybe I need to buy a new one for my Xmas present)

  • http://www.pocketables.net Jenn

Most popular devices: iPod (ubiquitous marketing), MP3-enabled camera phone, and PSP (even though the Nintendo DS has outsold the PSP, I still see more PSPs in the wild)

I would die without my UX180P, Treo 650, and drawer of digital audio players (#15 and #16 being delivered this week!).

I’m interested in how you, Judie, would answer these questions. What does the Gear Diary webmistress consider her most indispensible gear?

  • http://www.geardiary.com Judie

“What does the Gear Diary webmistress consider her most indispensible gear? ”

    2. Palm Treo 700wx (with the SMS patch that was just released – thank you Sprint!)

I agree with you on the PSP. Steve finally got one and he is nuts about it. :-P

  • Randius

    1. Acer TM3002 Laptop
    2. HP iPAQ hw6965

My favorite stuff is unlikely to be most people’s, but: I LOVE:
my zen v plus (good thing, I obsessed over it for 4 months–I’d have been sad if it had sucked!!!)
my DS lite (yummyummy, if only games cost less than like a third of the console =( .. )
my tablet pc (a toshiba satellite R15-S829 … old model so you probably won’t have anything for it in store, but just tablet pc stuff in general :D )

  • http://www.ilcicali.com sardauker

    2) Siemens S55 cell phone
    3) Samsung SGH-Z150 cell phone
