Goin’ to Kansas City…Kansas City Here [We] Come

Posted on 19 November 2006 by

I have to show you something I saw at the Houston Airport, that I can honestly say that I never thought I would see; it was kinda cool, actually…

There was a guy traveling with one of those Dell “Media Mogul” laptops, the M2010.

Have you seen one of these before? I had heard they were huge, but that doesn’t even begin to cover its size in person. As we walked by this guy while looking for a seat, I saw it lying on the bench next to him, and I literally did a double take!

For those that aren’t familiar with it, the M2010 has a 20.1″ screen…and it is so big that it basically makes into its own briefcase. It needs to, because it weighs almost 20 pounds! Its specs are impressive - don’t get me wrong, it’s just not what I think of when I think of “portable”…not even close. :-P

Evidently its case is covered with some sort of leather padding – it’s hard to describe, but it looked pretty elegant even though it was huge. I nearly embarrassed my ex, because I said I was going to walk over and ask the guy if I could get a picture of him with it.

But I didn’t! I took spy shots instead. ;-)

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

Judie, I am sure that the dude would have let you take that pic of him with the computer… anyone with such an impressive piece of hardware would know who you are and would say OK! LOL.

Weight, near 20 lbs? wont it break the wimpy airplane tray tables?

I totally wanted to ask him…but the look of horror in Steve’s eye. I just couldn’t do it. ;-)

I once took an informal poll of people seated near us at a Cubs game about which of my user interface designs they liked better. The couple that I had invited to the game might have been a little embarrassed but my wife said it was part of my natural charm. (I think she was being diplomatic.)
