In New York for the Samsung Event

Posted on 13 December 2006 by

I just got into New York for tonight’s Samsung’s 10th Anniversary (in the US) Party & Dinner and tomorrow’s Mobile Tech Summit. You should see this cute hotel room I’m staying in…”cute” meaning little and snug. ;-)

It’s called a “pod room”, and it’s not just because the alarm clock is an iHome iPod dock…take a look around my “pod”. Here’s the little desk where my laptop is now set up. The room has free wireless, so yay! :-)

It’s quite a bit bigger than the capsule hotel Larry wrote about, and believe it or not – my room was actually upgraded from a single to a full bed. ;-)

There’s my Vaja messenger bag which is getting quite a workout…

Under the bed are the dresser drawers…

The toilet is in the shower! I almost feel like I am in a travel home. ;-)

The room is probably 12′ long x 8′ wide. It’s actually very bright and cheery, and it has every comfort. For one person, it’s not too cramped at all.

That’s my Tom Bihn Aeronaut bag peeking from the closet space – it was nice to travel without any checked luggage for once! :-)

More from the Samsung event later…

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

Thats crazy! Toilet in the shower?!? That bed looks small and uncomfy… I can picture myself banging my head on the desk or that self thingy on the other side :P .
I hope the rates are not typical of New York hotels though.

Judie, what’s the name of the hotel – might be worth staying at if the rates & location are decent…

I am staying at the Pickwick Arms, which is in the 100ish range. It’s on E 51st, so it’s not too far from everything. They are also in the process of doing some major remodeling – it will be even cuter when they are done. :-)

I just love the look of that Vaja bag every time I see it. A fantastic colour combination!!!

    “A fantastic colour combination!!!”

I agree! And it looks even better in real life; I love that bag! :-)

Is that a PDA on the wall ? Nice color and resolution ! VGA?

    Ha – that’s a 13″ (or so) LG flat screen TV . ;-)

I looked at the map, and you’re right: that’s not too far from the mid-town attractions for a visitor. I love the free wi-fi in every room (I wish every hotel would provide that.) Now if I can just convince my wife to go for the bunk bed idea…

Toilet *in* the shower?!?! o.O Where do you stand to take a shower? On the toilet seat? O.o Talk about your safety liability issues… Maybe if it tipped in and out like the one on Firefly… hehe

I guess they don’t have to worry so much about keeping the toilet clean though… Just close the curtain and blast away with the hot water… lol

Welllll…the toilet wasn’t actually under the shower head or anything – the entire shower area was about 7′ long, and there was an interior curtain and partition to keep the two separate. But it was still “different”, as the sliding shower steam door was also the door to the entire affair. ;-)

    Two things;

    A) re: the shower, my sister had a setup like that when she spent 5 months in China recently. That was a “western” setup – most toilets she encountered there were simply holes in the floor.

    2) I got one of the iHome alarm clocks for Christmas. I’m still getting used to it but my biggest gripe so far is the fact that you can wake only to all music. I’d prefer if you could select a playlist to wake to, even one of the predefined iTunes playlists

iii) Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!
