This May Sound Disrespectful…

And it is completely off topic, but I feel the need to complain. Ha!

So anyway…the US is coming off the biggest and most disruptive holiday week of the year. Our mail hasn’t been delivered since Saturday, and mail service had only begun to catch up from the Christmas Crunch. It is now Tuesday, January 2nd, and because of former president Gerald Ford’s funeral today there will be no mail until Wednesday.

US Post Office Closed Jan 2

This might not seem like a big deal to some, but since it is also the beginning of the new year and the beginning of a new month, important items which are being sent or received by mail will be delayed yet again.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that banks have a law where they can’t be closed for more than two days in a row – because they would then be basically denying us access to our money for an unreasonable amount of time. I wish the same was true of the Post Office.

So my apologies to the Ford family, I certainly mean you no disrespect, and I realize that your loved one’s death is more than an “inconvenience”. But for our country’s workforce, especially those that had to show up for work today, I think that flying the US Postal Service’s flags at half-mast would have been plenty appropriate.

I’ve aired my beef, you may now return to your regular gadget reading. ;-)

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

My wife works for the Federal Government and she is at work today. She is considered “essential” and that is why she working on this Federal Day of Rememberance. I would consider the mail essential and expect it to be open too. I don’t feel like it is disrespectfull at all. In fact, I think President Ford, as a dedicated public servant, would actually want essential persons to be at work today.

Godspeed Mr. President. Everyone else… back to work.

I totally agree. These folks don’t need an extra day off. If anything they should work an extra day in Ford’s honor. Any excuse for the government employees to take a day off and cost us more money is the norm. I doubt a single one of of these employees are doing any “remembering”.

    Don’t get me started!
