Apple introduces their much anticipated iPhone!

Today at MacWorld 2007 Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone, Apple Inc.’s (no longer Apple Computer, Inc.) first foray into the growing mobile phone sector. The iPhone incorporates an array of interesting features including a high resolution 320×480 3.5″ touchscreen, 4GB or 8GB of flash memory, Quadband GSM/EDGE, WiFi and BT 2.0. Unfortunately a 3G radio didn’t make it onto this list, so anybody hoping for some speedy UMTS/HSDPA surfing will be disappointed.

Forgoing most of the buttons that typically adorn a phone, the iPhone relies heavily on its touchscreen for control and input. It is designed for use without a stylus, so controls are big and easy to press with a finger. The onscreen keyboard is designed to be used in a similar fashion to the hardware keyboards on the Treo and Blackberry Pearl.

The device runs a version of Mac OS X, and includes Apple’s Safari browser for an improved web experience.

Initially the iPhone will be available from Cingular, with prices of $499 for the 4GB model and $599 for the 8GB model, both with 2 Year service agreements. They are predicting availability in June, as it is yet to be certified by the FCC.

Much Like other devices with a slick glossy surface, I bet the iPhone touch screen is going to be a oily fingerprint magnet, lol.

I can imagine so!! The screen on my Treo gets all oily sometimes, and thats gross enough, but when the whole face is made of similar stuff!!! Urgh!!

  • Allen Hong

Yeah, my Nokia 9500 is like that too… the whole face plate with screen and keypad is glossy plastic. Thats why I use the bluetooth headset as much as possible to avoid putting the phone up to my ear.

Hm. This could be a good one, Judie. Looks like Jobs’ team broke out of the “less than 3″ and must have a QWERTY keypad” mold. I wouldn’t mind a slightly bigger screen, but Apple has such a good reputation for screen display, it might be fine.

I worry about the smudge factor, too, especially with the stylus specifically designed out, but it has bluetooth, and I love my Cardo headset anyway, so that might not be an issue. And it sure don’t look like it weighs no 20 ounces, either.

Can’t wait to hold one and check it out in person!

I know…it is tempting! :-) ) I am worried about the slick surface though. Keeping it shine free would make me crazy. It is definitely some tasty eye candy, though. :-)

    I want one now! :)

Smudges will be an issue, but they are an issue for my black iPod as well. I used one of the clear plastic cases and don’t worry anymore. It’s not as small and thin as it was before, but it’s protected.

Also, don’t you think that some of the well-known screen protector manufacturers will produce something for the iPhone? It would still be thin, you could still use the screen but it would be protected a bit.

Hmmm, is it just me or does the iPhone (the Apple one) resemble a Star Trek PADD (Personal Access Display Device)? Oh yeah, a Star Trek LCARS skin would look incredible on it! Hmmm, I just may have to get one too. ;)

Oooh, your right it does too. You’ve got me needing one too :D

Hey Allen did you see the latest pics in Judies Flickr feed that she took for us? :D
