One of my favorite laptop accessories is the Newton Peripherals MoGo, a palm sized mouse which stores and charges in a laptop’s PCMCIA slot.
But what if you use a laptop that has given up the full-sized PCMCIA slot for its Express-sized cousin? Well up until last week, you would have been out of luck. However…

Jack at Experience Mobility recently posted about the MoGo Mouse X54, the solution for those whose laptops didn’t come with the full size PCMCIA slot.
According to Jack:
The MoGo Mouse X54™, introduced today, is a Bluetooth-enabled wireless mouse designed for mobile computer users whose laptops are equipped with an ExpressCard/54 slot, including those manufactured by Acer, Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway, HP, Lenovo, NEC and Toshiba. It folds flat, stores and recharges in the ExpressCard/54 slot, and delivers a full range of user benefits, including:
Built-in center scrolling capability through an integrated scroll pad;
Integrated battery that recharges when stored in ExpressCard/54 slot; No software drivers required; More user-intuitive feel, with deeper finger depressions for more natural operation “Auto-on” functionality when the mouse is removed from the laptop’s ExpressCard/54 slot
What? Did I read this correctly? This version has scrolling capability?!!
Be still my beating heart…
Clever. Ingeneious. Perfect. Love it!

Now this is what I’ve been waiting for! I shyed away from the first version due to the lack of scroll capability.
My only questions are, does this charge in a PC card slot? And does it even fit in a PC card slot? Just wondering for those of us who still have PC card-equipped devices.

Chris, I think they must be planning to release a PCMCIA version with the scrolling fuction – surely that’s next.
OH! Did you check out their BT plug? Smallest (& cutest) I have ever seen.

The X54 will charge in the ExpressCard/54 slot. I believe (but this is not written in stone) that they will have an upgrade to the first rendition of the MoGo.

Hi Jack! So is it correct that an Express Card would not work in a PCMCIA slot?
Can you tell I have no experience with Express Cards?

Yeah the connector on Express Cards is diferent to the PCMCIA/PC cards of the past. They don’t use the same kind of pins, and the size of the connector is different. Here is a comparison of the connector on my SD PCMCIA reader and SD ExpressCard reader.
