Arne Hess, fellow Mobian and Publisher & Editor in Chief of ”the::unwired“, has launched a new site that will be of particular interest to those that are interested in placeshifting technology, “the::placeshift“.
To sum placeshifting up in the proverbial nutshell, it involves hardware or software that allows the user to get customized content wherever they want it and whenever they want it.
Arne sent this email out to some friends and collegues, and with his permission, I am reprinting it here:
I’m happy to announce today the launch of my latest baby – the::placeshift. I’m sure the name says all – the::placeshift – which I soft launched today in a public Beta – will be about place shift technologies which I’m thrilled about since I made my first experiences with some “self-cooked” software some time ago. However, since I’m not a software developer at all, I never continued on my own but thankfully some companies like Sling Media, Orb and others jumped into the game by developing and offering great place shift solutions.
Since I was using these solutions the first time on my Windows Mobile devices and Notebooks (doesn’t matter if at home or on the go), I knew this will become another major hype and not just a buzzword because place shifting media – doesn’t matter if it is TV, video, audio or photos – gives the us access to the highest possible customized content, something very special and personal. Place shifting as a technology adds real value to mobile devices, from mobile phones to PDAs to UMPCs to Notebooks/Tablet PCs and the feedback I got from the::unwired readers (when I was covering place shifting technologies) was so overwhelming that I’ve decided to launch a new dedicated platform for consumers, where you get the latest information, tips, tricks and reviews about place shift developments. And if I follow the last week’s CES announcements and developments, it’s simply the perfect timing to start the new platform today.
That’s why I have “born” the::placeshift which will covers the latest soft- and hardware developments from the place shift industry. As before with the::unwired, I will stay pretty concentrated on this topic, which doesn’t mean that I’m not going to cover the one or the other media (PC) related topic. Let’s say Windows Vista SideShow remote controls are also a kind of cool place shift since these devices shifts the information from the TV screen to a remote control (maybe anytime even a Windows Mobile device which would be the link back to the::unwired). Or programming TV shows remotely over a mobile phone to get the recorded show streamed back to the same phone. But I will also talk about IPTV since it is also a kind of place shift TV as long as you can receive it with any Internet connection, etc, etc.
With the::placeshift I want to give users a platform where they can get independent information to find the best solution for everybody’s (different) need, a place to ask for support and a place to share opinions.
Now it’s up to me to make the::placeshift a strong and healthy community and I’ve already started in the past days to fill up the::placeshift with content, that you have something to read, just in case you want to have a look too.
As you might noticed, the::placeshift looks similar to the::unwired and that’s why I call the launch a Beta soft launch. Not everything is done yet, even if everything should work but I have to work on the layout and some more functions during the next days and weeks. If you find any bugs, please let me know. But now, let us welcome another website – a place for you to get more out of your media. So, what do you think? Please let me know in the comments and if you have anything to contribute, from news to tips and tricks to reviews – I’m always happy about your feedback!
Cheers ~
Arne
