One of my favorite sites (out of necessity) is www.macfixit.com - I never process an update on any of my 3 macs until I check this site and give the early adopters time to update and comment. There are comments on your exact issue up on it now. Give it a read.  Very mixed results.  Your rule about not updating until you must is a good one - but sometimes to have to do so to process subsequent updates that you need.  Welcome to the confusing world of Apple .  .  .  .
