The HTC Athena Appears in Asia as the Dopod U1000

Palm is Life Administrator (and Gear Diary Team member) Larry just sent several links to the latest information on the HTC Athena, or Dopod U1000 as she will be known in Asia. Larry said, “Athena will launch February 2007, at NT$39900.
Taiwan.CNET is offering the following specs and pictures, but the price – being approximately $1200US…is just…ouch. 
Obviously some of the following information is still in Chinese, but you should be able to tell the gist of it…

…the 5″ VGA screen makes me want to forgive a multitude of sins…
Hopefully the $1200 price is an anomaly, as it doesn’t jibe with other information coming in.
And for those of you wondering what in the world you would do with a wireless enabled PPC tablet of this size: don’t discount the Athena until you have actually seen it, held it, tried it, played with it…

I think the US$1200 price is for real – the Euro499 that T-Mobile is offering in Europe is with contract, something that’s pretty rare in Asia. It’s also just a little higher than the price of the Universal when it first came out.

Hmmm…sure wish I could get one with a contract, then.
And you are right about the Athena’s price versus the Universal; I guess it is reasonable, but I don’t have to like it. Ha!
