Unboxing the i-mate JAQ3

Posted on 13 February 2007 by

I received an email a couple weeks ago saying “Jim Morrison wants to send you an i-mate JAQ3 Windows Mobile phone – can you please send me your detailed shipping address and contact telephone numbers?” I know the poor guy must get it all the time, but his name did give me a bit of a start. ;-)

I sent in my details, and late last week a JAQ3 appeared. We’ll do the unboxing together now, and the review is tentatively scheduled for March 5.

Documentation, CDs and a case are included in the top half of the box…

…the bottom half has the JAQ3, the charger, and other goodies.

Here’s everything laid out…

The JAQ3 measures 5″ long x 2.65″ wide x 0.57″ thick, and it weighs 5.1 ounces. The edges are rounded just enough that it fits quite comfortably in my hand, and I like its overall appearance.

The camera says 2.0 megapixel, so hopefully it will do better than some of the other PDA cameras I’ve tried.

SIM card placement is a bit different than I am used to seeing – instead of a slot with a retaining bracket, this one has a slot in which to insert the SIM.

The stylus is nothing special – a telescoping jobbie, but – I think it is awesome that the PDA phone runs WM5 Pocket PC Phone Edition, not Smartphone as I halfway expected.

So far I like the JAQ3′s rubberized grippy coating, its smaller than expected size, and the full keyboard. The screen is bright, and performance seems okay; battery life…not so great, but I’ll get into that much more during the review process.

We’ll will be offering this JAQ3 in an upcoming give-away, so keep an eye out:-)

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

Looks pretty cool! I saw on pocketnow.com that they have also released the JAQ4. It would be nice to do a side by side comparative review of the two.

I would love to do one – but I don’t think I will be getting a JAQ4 anytime soon. This was a nice surprise, however. :-)

Man I have a need for total communications and that is a pretty little device to support my needs.

Have had my eye on this for a while. The telescoping stylus is a bit of a turnoff though… (Looks better than the wizards stylus though)
