Backing Up SMS

Posted on 16 March 2007 by

Recently a friend of mine swapped phones. During the process, he mentioned that he wasn’t aware of any way to back up all of the SMS messages he had been saving. I was stumped, too.

But in a fine example of kismet, I received this news item today:

Once in a while you come across things that after a glance you forgo, they never come back and eventually leave you regretting. Sounds too depressing  right? But won’t you feel the same if you lose your cell phone. Won’t you think of those five minutes you needed to logon to ZYB to secure your mobile content before losing it forever? Won’t you wish to revert time to avail the option you missed?

ZYB is an online phone data backup service – where you can store, manage & share mobile data without hassles. It delivers its service across the globe for no fees whatsoever.

ZYB has evolved over time and has launched a number of new services. Last month ZYB launched SMS backup. This new feature enables users to store SMS on zyb.com. The SMS can be viewed and used online and be restored to any phone. The SMS backup service is the first of its kind as it combines with the users own contact list and works for all mobiles – regardless of operators. Apart from the standard SMS rate charged by operators, backing up your SMS will initially be free.

Also ZYB has been nominated as RH 200 Finalists for Red Herring 100 Europe 2007 awards. Please check out this link.

Has anyone already tried this service? If not, then who wants to be the guinea pig? :-)

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

As a counterpoint, while I haven’t tried the SMS backup feature I did use ZYB to swap my phonebook over when I last changed handsets. It worked pretty well: http://www.slashgear.com/zyb-online-backup-saves-sms-too-113851.php

Now, so do I. But if you’ve ever tried to sync a Moto V3 using their AWFUL software suite you’ll know that you’re better off trying to store an angry squid in a string bag.

ZYB is a brilliant service. Nothing less than that! It has already saved me once, and the frequency of me losing my phone considered, it will save me again. And yes, it was a V3 thar I lost so i know their software suite
