Hope you'll be online soon, because I need HELP! My Archos 604 (regular, not wi-fi) has a dead battery, apparently. Even when left on its docking station for days, it'll only play for 4 minutes before shutting down. Problem is, I cannot get the battery cover off the back. I understand that it is supposed to slide upward toward the top of the unit, while sliding & holding the button at bottom. But I can't make it budge, no matter how hard I push. Is there some trick to this? I bought the Archos in May '07, and it has never had the battery replaced. I don't feel I should order a new battery till I found out I can actually open the unit for replacing it. So far, no luck. TIA for any tips. BTW, I couldn't view any of your photos on this site; got an Out of Memory on Line 2 msg.
Thanks,
Caely

Hi, Douglas,<br

It is nice to see some companies supporting the different major encodings produced by the community and, in this case, the open source community. Sure, Divx is nice but its not the only way to listen and watch media products. But, I know, I know, Divx is the only one you need Douglas!
I agree with you that 4 inches seem to be the the lowest size I can personally go to watch a movie. I tried on an Ipod and it's too small to enjoy for my taste.
I look forward to your next review! Great work and thanks again!

Actually, concerning codecs, the media world is full of different savors. You want OGG, too, eh? Doing a lot of downloads via BitComet? Most of my video watching is through movies I convert, or TiVo I'm pulling (I will be doing a TiVo-to-Go review soon, I hope), so I don't use OGG very often. I use Dr.Divx to convert, which produces AVI.
The Cowon D2 only has a 2.5" screen; that's just too small for me, decrepit 43 year-old that I am. I'd rather wait for the iPhone and see how it compares, honestly. While the screen on the iPhone is only 3.5" (the Archos and the Cowon are both 4"), it is 320x480 resolution (the Cowon and the Archos are 480x272), and I have a lot of faith in Apple's ability to produce a sharp, quality screen. But we shall see. And I have Cingular *and* my phone is dying, so I need a new phone anyway.
That's right, Gear Diary folks: you could get an iPhone review. But, you know, don't hold me to it.

Elo: Cowon didn’t send me the *first* one! I ordered it and returned it.

You want OGG, too, eh? The other thing that annoyed me with Archos is that you had to pay for extra codecs. The Cowon A2 has even OGG out of the box and I found that the extra codecs were useful. The touchscreen of the Archos looks very sweet and I am a big believer in touch interfaces and we definitely will get to see more of that.
It will be interesting to see how the new Cowon D2 that is now available in the US will fare against the Archos.
How about it Douglas? Cowon could send you one!

It’s true that the Cowon has to be held just right but I got used to it.

The other thing that annoyed me with Archos is that you had to pay for extra codecs. o) The Archos has a touchscreen.
o) The viewing angles on the Archos were better--if I didn't hold the Cowon just right, I found that the colors washed out. This didn't happen with the Archos.
o) I found the controls on the Archos much easier to deal with; that "jog button" thing on the Cowon drove me nuts.
Can't argue with the battery life, though; the Cowon kicks the Archos' butt in that regard.

I agree that the Cowon has a better screen. However:

o) The Archos has a touchscreen.<br

Personally, I thought the screen was not as good as the Cowon A2. Both the better screen quality and the amazing 8 hours of battery life made me buy the Cowon A2 instead of the Archos 604.

Thanks for the review Douglas.

Personally, I thought the screen was not as good as the Cowon A2.
