I am sure that there must have been other iPod advertisements featuring couples dancing – where only one of the dancers was actually wearing the easily spotted white earphones, but for whatever reason it never hit me until today how listening to a digital music player is really a very solitary act. After all, you are putting on the earphones, cranking up the music, and ideally shutting everyone else out while you retreat into the media.
As I watched this particular advertisement, the sight of a couple dancing – with only one of them actually being able to “hear” the music - seemed a bit ironic. After all, I could hear what was ostensibly being pumped through the dancer’s earphones. But for the purposes of the ad, wouldn’t only one of the dancers in the pair, the one with the earphones, be able to do the same?

“Just follow my lead, honey!”
Come to think of it, in the scene with the older woman and the child, only the woman is wearing earphones.
In real life, this would get you a “No fair mom, quit hogging the iPod!” That, or a “Crazy lady – quit trying to get me to dance with you! I can’t hear anything!”
Typical iPod ads are more like this next one – even if there are two people dancing, they each have their own ipod, and even if it might be a bit of a logistical nightmare (”okay – press play…now!“), they could possibly be listening to the same track.
So anyway; it’s nothing earth shaking, and I realize that it was a 30 second commercial and I shouldn’t take it so literally…but it just struck me as odd.

Absolutely! Here’s the link for those that haven’t seen it.

Very rarely use the iPod with headset, obviously my middle aged hearing doesn’t need a fresh assault, but you’re right I don’t like being shut out of the rest of the world. I’m an introvert but understand that what is going on right next to me is more important than tuning into the latest tune from Coldplay!
