UPDATED: Another Intel Concept, Too Good To Ever Be Produced?

This new concept laptop computer from Intel and a company called Ziba Design looks amazing, but the question is will it ever make it to the market? It is is designed to be ultra-slim and stylish, wrapped in leather like a diary, and be carried like a bag.

It is set to include WiFi, WiMax and cellular radios for always-on connectivity, but other specifications haven’t been given. According to the BusinessWeek article it may be be on production lines as early as late-2007, but I will believe it when it happens. All I can say is bring it on!

Thanks Stan for the tip!

UPDATE!

Actual pictures of this ultra-portable laptop have been let loose, showing off the display and its external e-ink display. There is also a 1920×1080 res video for download weighing in at 200Mb, but it does show off the laptop pretty well, particularly the external e-ink display. Use the torrent download, it is much faster (100+ kB/s vs. 30kB/s).

“All I can say is bring it on!”

    Not with those appearances. :worried:

They had better make a man-bag version.

Yes a more masculine version would be great. Definitely a good start though.

    Lol, man-bag.

I’ll take the olive green one. ;-)

Lose the strap, add an active digitizer and I’m in!

  • http://www.geardiary.com Mitchell Oke

Haha yeah I’m not terribly fond of the strap either.

I have to say I am pretty happy with my MacBook Pro. It has the nice big screen, and is very thin, just like this thing ;)

And I have it now :)

  • Elo

Yeah the MacBook Pro. There’s no argument there. The screen is fantastic and the thin design is great. The thing that prevented me from getting one was the weight and the fact that I only work on Tablets. So I got the Toshiba R400. It’s not as nice but it’s lighter and it’s thin. But I bet the MacBook Pro makes the perfect desktop replacement, especially the 17 inches!

I love these new designs! But I believe the tablet functionality is becoming important. It will be interesting to see how Dell will influence the market in this area. At least thin is in!

Yeah the thinness of the MBP 15″ really takes it out of the same size category of other 15.4″ers. It has more size similarity to my friends 14″ widescreen HP than other 15.4″ laptops, and even then it is considerably thinner. Apple did an amazing job with it. My only wish is that they had offered screen resolution options. I had a Dell Inspiron 8600 a few years back that squeezed 1680×1050 (same as my new Benq 22″ LCD) into the 15.4″ display, and they even offered 1920×1200!! For a powerful desktop replacement like the MBP, that would have been perfect. I would have been all over WUXGA like butter on toast.

To be honest I have never used a tablet PC (well maybe once or twice, but only in a shop). I have thought about getting one to try out before going headlong into it. There are always used tablets in decent condition on eBay AU for less than AU$1000, but I am saving for a new car so I don’t see myself getting one anytime soon.

The Dell tablet definitely looks interesting. I believe it is based on their Latitude D420, which is a very compact laptop, perfect for a tablet PC overhaul.

As long as they keep the weight down. I got used to my sub 4 pounds tablet. It is 3.7 pounds and quite frankly it’s incredible! I hardly feel it in my bag. I hope the Dell Tablet is not gong to be an over 5 pounds behemoth. Thin is nice but it has to be light if it’s destined to be carried around. It’s not that hard to do : Lenovo, Toshiba, Fujistu and Sony all have light designs.

That is a pretty sweet weight!! My MBP 15″ is 5.6 pounds, which for a 15″ is pretty good considering it doesn’t skimp on anything (CPU, Graphics, size). Literally the best laptop I have ever bought.

Only regret is I didn’t go for the 200GB HDD :P

My XPS M170 is about 8-10 pounds! I carried it for two weeks when I started work. I had just arrived in Melbourne and it was the only laptop I brought with me! My back was killing me. Once I got the R400, I was literally flying to the office with my feet barely touching the ground! As for my XPS, its a sweet laptop but I admit I would change it for a MacBook Pro 17″ any day. There is something to be said about the OS platform too isn’t there ? Now that Leopard is almost ready, it sure looks like a fantastic platform to work with.

Anyway, I want to see thinner and lighter 12″ Tablets(I say tablets because it’s what I love: you have the laptop AND the pen functionality which I can’t live without). At the moment, I am saving for the HTC Shift! *drools.

  • http://www.geardiary.com Mitchell Oke

Haha, Judie wants a HTC Shift too ;)

The M170 is a heavy beast!! But then again is does have that 1920×1200 screen, 7900GTX graphics and those cool lights. Definitely a desktop replacement, only meant for desk use :P

I think the 17″ MBP would be pretty good size wise. I had a look at one in the shop a few weeks after I got my MBP, and I was surprised how similar it was in size to the 15″. Didn’t have the extra $800 to get it though so it was a moot point.
