The Samsung SGH-i600 (but not the i601/607) has a dust problem, reminiscent of the problem that afflicted one of the HTC smartphone models years ago. I have read about this problem more than once on the MoDaCo forum, but I haven’t actually seen it, and after seeing this picture on Tracy and Matt, I am very worried! There must have been some internal design change for the i601/607, which is almost identical except for the WiFi and GSM/UMTS bands, because I haven’t read any dust horror stories.

This takes me all the way back to the early iPAQ days – when we would try all kinds of crazy things like taping the stylus silo to keep dust out. (shudder)

I had dust in my very first iPaq, six years ago, but that one went back to Compaq for an unrelated warranty issue. I’ve barely even heard about dust issues since then, so this is surprising to say the least.

Ahh, the old iPAQ dust issues. Fills me with nostalgia it does! And how about the “Silver Slider” to add a Compact Flash slot?

You know, I never had one of the iPAQ 3xxx series! I had the 1930, 2210 and 4350 (that was a brilliant device), but never the 3xxx or 5xxx. At that time I had a Jornada 545. The screen on that couldn’t have been much worse, so dust wouldn’t have been an issue if it had any

Oh Yes! The Silver Slider…remember Whitney’s Baqpaqs? They were even thinner. The good ol’ days!

I did have the grips peal and fall off the iPAQ 2210 though HP sent me out some new ones really quickly!
I wished I’d gotten into all that stuff, but didn’t have ANY money then (was only like 12 ), only had my dads Jornada that he swapped me for a Palm V (that I got from him damaged, and paid to get fixed, AU$200 for a new unit from Palm!!) and an Imation RipGo MP3 CD Burner! That Jornada is really the reason I’m here now

Mitchell, it is so easy to forget how young you are! And that’s a compliment!

Haha thanks

Judie: Yup, I remember the Baqpaqs too. I had one sewn into a Vaja case. Damn it was cool!
Mitchell: I got started with a Jornada 545 as well! I loved that little guy to bits!

Yeah I have to admit it was pretty cool. Used it with a whopping 64MB CF card that cost $120 at the time as an MP3 Player as well as playing games and stuff. Died an unfortunate death with a broken screen

ok… back on topic now…
believe it or not, I’ve got a couple of specs of dust in my i607, and it has me concerned. I also thought of my old iPAQ 3000 series devices (I had a 3100, 3650, and 3765). I hope this doesn’t become a problem….
