My Reaction To Reactrix

Posted on 01 June 2007 by

Today, while I had my Honda truck in for repairs, I went to the mall and discovered the most awesome thing I have ever seen.  The first thing I saw was a big tile on the floor that was getting video projected on to it from a projector mounted on the ceiling.  At first I thought that it was a new way of advertising stuff, as that was what was on the screen – or rather, the floor.

Then the really cool and awesome part came, the whole thing is interactive! Games appeared. YES! There are  games! :-D

To play, you step on the big tile/screen and your foot steps will make things happen. WEEEEEE!!!

I have never had so much fun playing an interactive game before this one, and I enjoyed it so much that I spent almost a hour playing the games over and over. It must have been a funny sight to others in the food court who did not know about the device; which is called the Reactrix. I am sure that those people surely thought I was crazy since I was jumping, moving, and almost dancing in the same spot.

The Reatrix I found is at The Galleria Mall in White Plains, Weschester County. I hope that Gear Diary readers can find other locations with this to try out, because it is so much fun! Oh and by the way, the Reactrix company has a website which can be found here for more information about how it works and locations of other Reactrix setups. Also, there is a video of the Reactrix in action on the website too! Just click on the ”CLICK TO PLAY REEL” in the lower right.

Allen is a computer technician with experience spanning MS-DOS to present. Having been a Star Trek fan all of his life has given him a love for technology. Tech toys and gadgets are also a weakness of his. Allen also loves video games, especially the classics and is a big Nintendo portable gaming fanboy and has his DS with him everyday so that he can get his gaming fix daily. He can also be considered a couch potato as he is addicted to watching TV, especially the Sci Fi Channel with its B-movies.

That looks cool, but doesn’t your shadow get in the way?

    reidme:

Somehow, I think the Reactix senses the shadows in the tile area to produce the reactions projected. Sometimes, if you are standing directly in the middle of the big tile your body shadow can get in the way. But putting your foot forward and on target (something like doing dance moves) will prevent big shadows. And in the companys demo video… it shows people using their hands too.

I forgot to mention that I think this is a good workout, all that moving around and jumping is sure to help burn some calories. :)

I believe Reactrix will be coming to many other shopping centers in the country over the next 12 months. Look to find them at the big ones first and then they will filter into the smaller “B” centers.

    Nice story Allen!
