Messing With A Classic?

Posted on 02 June 2007 by

I know I just posted about a the upcoming Speed Racer movie, which would have ordinarily stopped me from posting about yet another upcoming movie so soon…but how could I resist?

We’re talking about the Get Smart movie here. Yep, you heard right!

One of my favorite TV shows ever is coming to the big screen. The idea of a Get Smart movie should probably make me more nervous than it is, but look at the line-up: they have pegged Steve Carrell to play Agent Maxwell Smart and Anne Hathaway for Agent 99. I can totally see both actors in those roles, so already I’ve got a good feeling. Other cast members will be Alan Arkin as Chief of CONTROL, Terence Stamp as Seigfried, and The Rock as Agent 23.

I see enough of a resemblance between the main actors and the originals to be comfortable; what do you think?

2008 is shaping up to be an interesting movie year. :-)

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

Get Smart is a paraody of all spy movies and if they remove the campyness of the original and make it all too serious, then it is going to suck.

Since Steve Carrell (The Office, The 40 Year Old Virgin, etc.) is pretty campy, and since Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada, Princess Diaries, etc) has always had a funny streak and has done physical comedic sequences, I think the directors were thinking “campy” when they hired them. I have high hopes for this one. :-)
