I get a lot of really cool stuff to review for my day job, so at any one time the Cave (my affectionate nickname for my pint-sized flat) is usually brimming with all sorts of goodies - a kind of digital fun park for the geekily-inclined.
This month I’ve got some especially nifty gear that I thought I’d share with Gear Diary readers - and, time permitting, possibly review as well!
First up, I’ve got the Samsung M8 LCD TV in the living room. Hot diggity dang, this is my favourite HD television so far! Picture quality is smokin’ - in a Jim-Carrey-in-the-movie-Mask kinda way, rather than a Oh-my-God-it’s-on-fire way. I’ve tested TV sizes from 40 to 60 inches, and I’ve decided that 40 is definitely the magic number. The M8 features 3 HDMI 1.3 ports, a gorgeously-glossy piano black casing, and jaw-dropping visuals that make me want to burn an analogue TV effigy in thanks to the HD gods.
You may not have noticed it, but on the right-hand side of the Samsung M8, I’ve got a little silver box standing upright. That’s the Acer Aspire L320 - a ’small form factor’ Viiv-enabled PC that’s incredibly compact and good-looking: about the footprint of an ultra-portable laptop but with the thickness of a desktop replacement notebook. Admittedly, I’ve only used it to play a freebie Law & Order game that I snagged from the local newsagency, but it’s got a sweet 320GB hard drive and Windows Vista Home Edition which would be good for storing music and videos for playback through the TV and Hi-Fi. No TV tuner though - bummer!
The last stop in the living room are this set of small, bookshelf-sized speakers. They look like your regular, everyday, run-of-the-mill speakers, do they not? But ha - they’re not! These babies are the AV Labs wireless Bluetooth speakers, and they can stream music from any A2DP source, including mobile phones. I tried this with a champagne gold Motorola KRZR K1 (I just had to mention the colour - it’s gorgeous!), and it worked great, albeit with some interference from my wireless network. Sound quality is amazing - rich, driving bass and enough kick to full a large room.
Next up in the Gadget Factory Tour is the bedroom. We were lucky enough to get a long weekend this weekend, and a lot of it was spend recuperating in bed. No TV in the bedroom, but ha - we didn’t need one! Not when we had the Viewsonic ViewDock projector, which we propped up in the window to project movies from my iPod. We watched the entire first season of My Name is Earl (love that show!), as well as a few episodes of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and Arrested Development. Quality of the built-in speakers are a bit tinny, but this shortcoming was easily rectified by connecting it to my excellent Harman Kardon Go + Play speakers.
Also connected to the Go + Play speakers (only one at a time, though) is the marvellous Pinnacle SoundBridge. With all of my music saved on my laptop, I wanted an easy way for my partner (who’s not so tech-inclined) to play music in the bedroom. The SoundBridge is perfect for this; using a remote control and bright OLED display, he can navigate through playlists, artists, albums and song names, and stream music from my laptop in the living room. It’ll even connect to Internet radio stations.
That’s all I have time for this month, but be sure to watch this space in a few weeks time for the next Gadget Factory Tour!

That Samsung TV is YUM!
Thanks for the tour…(wiping drool from chin).
