Welcome to the WayBack Machine

Posted on 03 March 2008 by

No, you haven’t traveled back in time.

Gear Diary suffered a massive and catastrophic hard drive and server crash on its former host, HostICan, on March 1st, 2008. We are in the process of rebuilding, but the truth of the matter is that we have probably lost many months of hard work. I’ll post details of whole sordid tale shortly (here you go, and enough said), but first I need to finish getting the site presentable.

Pretend you just came over and caught me with the day’s laundry on the sofa after a tornado. ;-)

Thank you for your patience, well wishes, and most of all – thank you for your support.

More soon…

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

Very good to see you back. I’ve been away for the weekend myself as well so I didn’t miss a lot, but I *chose* to be away. I don’t even want to imagine how stressful it must have been for you all to deal with this if the communication with people you rely on is so troublesome. (Read about this on JAMM)
Looking forward to see new posts on GD appear on my RSS reader again!

 Back online is good :D

Welcome back. And how appropriate that the first post (underneath this one) is the Sprint Mogul.

I bought that device based on THAT review — and it was my main brain for many months until the iPhone dislodged it…

    Judie you rock.

Good Luck Judie… I feel your pain.
Call me if you need any help.

My sincere condolences. Sounds like HostICan dropped the ball big time and now you’ve got to clean up their mess.

Welcome back Judie – Hope you can recover most everything eventually, but if you can’t, it will be OK…no one with a gadget fetish hasn’t suffered through a catastrophic crash and lost data as some point. You do the best you can to rebuild and then grit your teeth and go on.
    We’re all sympathetic, for sure!

Let us know if we can do anything to help!

@Wayne – That was my first thought too, although I still have my Mogul, and mostly still love it.

You all are awesome – thank you so much for your support! And just for fun…my buddy Mike has a great picture of me in crisis mode. ;-)

As soon as I get some more back-end stuff done (including getting the last of the prizes from our prematurely ended giveaway labeled to ship), I’ll do the post about everything that went wrong…((sigh))

Anytime something like this happens, it reminds me of my first major lesson in technology. I was in 9th Grade and we were studying Romeo and Juliet. We had a worksheet of questions and essays to complete as we read the play. I was diligently working on mine when something happened the night before it was due (this would be the Apple II+ with Bankstreet Writer) and my worksheet was just GONE! Nowhere to be found. I spent the whole night in crisis mode recreating it. I forget what grade I got, but anytime anything goes wrong with computers, we always talk about that Romeo and Juliet worksheet. :)

Wow. It’s good that you’re back but… ouch. The headlines and beginning of all recent posts are still out there on the RSS feed. So there’s some of the old material available.

Well I had to do something with this crazy creativity formally used to try and win a new bag ;) Glad to see you all are back in action, best wishes on a speed recovery.

fishgal! You just put a huge smile on my face. :-D

Speaking of prizes…I still have 10 left from the month of give-aways (which was about to spill into March). They are boxed, ready to go – and I am not unwrapping them!

So we will figure out another give-away soon…probably involving a device, as well. :-)

I think Fishgal’s poem ought to win something. :)
