Today is simply way too hectic for me to devote the time I need (and want) to do either a full MacBook Pro unboxing pictorial or video…and it’s killing me! I want to open my box!
Since I have a Samsung camcorder review due next week, I should probably do a video, right?
That means either waiting until tomorrow or maybe even later tonight – do you think I can hold out?
I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford
NOPE. You’re gonna open it, and then make out like you didn’t.(and you know it!)
C’mon..!!!! Open the box!!

Come on you have to at least charge it..

Guys, it’s cheating to open it and not film it as it happens…and I can’t charge it without opening it!

Judie, I’m with you – savor the moment… like fine wine or Christmas morning… I would wait!

A hell….rip it open!

In the amount of time it’s taken to respond to this, you could have unboxed it by now Hehe

Ive been doing other things! sheesh! but the box is calling to me…

if you are going to wait this long, you should make sure you record the expression on your face when you open the box too i couldn`t possibly be able to wait that long with the box sitting next to me. i`d have to lock it away

I’m a life-long Windows user but recently I’ve been tempted by the MacBooks.
Other than the obvious (i.e. size and CPU speed), what is the difference between the MacBook and MacBook Pro. I mainly use a laptop for travel so I’ve been leaning more toward the smaller MacBook.
Also, I rely extensively on Exchange. How close is Entourage in funtion to Outlook 2007?
TIA Don

Hi Don, thanks for coming out of the shadows.
Obviously I can’t answer your questions, but I did want to welcome you. I am sure some of the more Mac-experienced will be chiming in soon.

Hey Don, Unless you need high performance graphics then the MacBook would be fine. Uses the same Core 2 Duo chips, just slightly lower clock frequencies.
My free Exchange account doesn’t allow me to connect to a desktop client unfortunately, but Chris Spera might be using one with his Mac. I’d drop an email to him. Cheers!

Judie just do it or have you already done it?

Ok! I did finally do it, and it was filmed. I need to edit the video, but I have been quiet this weekend partly because I have been exploring the MBP.
I’m in the process of figuring out how to move everything over. Mitchell found a program, O2M to convert my Outlook files so I could keep all of my email files (a big deal for me), and so far I have installed MacOffice, iWork, AppZapper, FireFox, BootCamp and Windows XP Pro service pack 2. I have to use certain Windows only programs still, so I am going to give Parallels a try.
One question – and you all can laugh at the newbie-ness: how do you right click when in the Windows side, when there is no right click on the mouse? Just askin…
Wayne Schulz
Ctrl + Click = Right Click
Also I found a lot of options could be set in System Preferences.
This was the first thing I wondered about too.

No Wayne, not the Apple side – when you are in Windows. How do you do a right click?
But that was the first thing I had trouble with.
http://www.geardiary.com Judie Lipsett
Never mind! I figured it out – in the windows side you emulate a right click by placing two fingers on the pad and clicking! YAY!
Wayne Schulz
In VMWARE the Ctrl-Click worked for me on Friday when I was running Windows XP.

Ah, that’s the problem. I was on the actual Windows partition; I haven’t yet installed Parallels because I am still updating and configuring Windows.

I’ve found Parallels to be perfect for running the few Windows-only apps that I must have. The Coherence feature is great, too.
I don’t have Multi-touch like *some* people (let’s see, where’s that jealousy smilie…), but when I’m on the laptop keyboard (no mouse), my favorite feature is the two-finger scroll.
Can’t wait to see that vid!

Yeah, I seriously need to process the video…I know. This weekend just got away from me! But I will definitely have it this week.
Joel Mclaughlin
Get on with it!
Just kidding! Take your time J and do it right!

Ha! It may take some heavy editing. Jerry filmed it with the Samsung camcorder I will be reviewing this week, and to put it bluntly – he did some really jerky zooming. I’ll have to see what I can salvage, but it will probably be pretty painful to watch.
