Evernote Beta: So Much More Than Note Taking

Posted on 13 March 2008 by

There’s more to the latest Evernote Software beta release than simplifying the process of taking notes. As all future software will, Evernote runs smoothly on three platforms: Web, Windows and MAC OS. But… as they say on TV – “that’s not all” – find out below how to and why you’ll want to download this very cool software.

I’ve been a user of Evernote on the Windows platform for about a year. I started to use the software so that I could eliminate all my separate scratch pads filled with notes.

Does this sound familiar to you?

When you get to the office, you start taking notes on a pad of paper next to your computer. As you get more involved in the day – so do your notes. By the end of the day you have 5 pages of notes – with phone numbers and names of people you need to contact.

At the end of the day you pickup and leave the office. Without your notes.

As you sit by your computer at home – how many times do you wish that the notes you forgot at the office – could be at home with you.

This is the solution that Evernote provides. Seamless (and synchronized) access to your notes anywhere.

The beauty of Evernote is that it now handles all of the synchronization behind the scenes. Once you are able to take notes in one place and have them available to every computer that you use (and in a pinch you can log into the web and view all your notes there!).

There is a newly re-designed Windows Version:

A new Mac version:

And an innovative web version:

With Evernote you also have the ability to search within photographs that you copy into your notes. The software has an uncanny ability to decipher text within photos.

Note taking software is a dime a dozen. At the most basic level you can use the free included text notepad with either Windows or Mac to take notes. So why use Evernote?

One word – synchronization.

evernotesync

All of the data that you’ve entered into your office version of Evernote, is synchronized automatically to all three versions: the Web, Windows, and to the Mac version.

If you find yourself making notes throughout the day and having trouble finding them – this is definitely a program that you should use.

I’m gonna have to give this a go, sounds great!

Could you use the web to add notes with a WM device and keep track of notes just through the internet? Is the PC or Mac version a must to use this?

  • Wayne Schulz

I am pretty sure there is (or will be) a WM version. There of course may be some limitations on what you can do with it.

You do NOT need a PC or MAC to access the notes. You could live a perfectly happy existence just using the web access. Some of the features may not be available in the web only version though. Since this is beta still – we won’t know for a little bit what features make it to the final release.

Still, this is simply an awesome way to keep notes and throw out all those redundant notepads kicking around your office. I know that I always have the problem of scratching out a note and then misplacing it.

With Evernote, no matter where you enter this — it shows up on all your versions – Web, MAC, Windows.

    Very cool.

There is a WM version, but as it requires the Windows version of Evernote (for the moment at least) I have not tried it.

I am DYING to get in on the Web beta…hopefully they’ll send me an invite soon! :-D

Last I noticed the Webware link at the end of the article had a special beta sign up page. That’s how I got into the beta — it took about an hour for them to respond with my invitation.

Apart from integration with a browser, there’s not a whole lot left out of Evernote Mobile. Inking works, you’ve got categories and the time-band – I like it, even in the current beta form. I can’t wait for proper syncing – right now, my note files have to be manually moved between PC and mobile.
