Plus just realised the fact that proposed savings are based on 3 hours a day usage. Alright new numbers for you... If throughout the month you had an average of 6 of these 23W lights burning 24/7 (rather than the 120W ones) you would save almost 420 kw hours which at $0.1/kwr would save you about 42 dollars!
Hopefully you will see those numbers reflected in next bill :)

Yeah Judie I do see. See what I mean?
In a room with four lights, instead of 480 watts for perhaps hours on end, it would be just 92 watts (if using the CFL floodlights) - that's a huge difference.
The proposed savings on the front of the package isn't really relevant in my situation, because I am replacing much higher wattage bulbs than those to which they are comparing.

@tabi13 – I think the savings should be greater, because (for instance) in the kitchen – instead of burning 360 Watts (3 120w incandescents), it would be only 69 watts. Did I do the math right? I dont think you would really notice that on your energy bill.
I think the main advantage of CFLs or any other low consumption lights (unless we talk about hundreds of lights running at the same time) is not really in the money you save, but the responsible attitude towards better utilizing our worlds resources.

So if ONE of these bulbs claim average $50 savings over its average life span of 7 years (CFLs, I am sure the LEDs will last MUCH longer), and if we assume that an average 15 lights are on ALL the time during any given month, it would mean a saving of only about $9 per month.<br

@mpmarus - right, but remember I have those huge recessed cans to fill. I can't just stick a regular bulb in there or it will look really bad - especially in the kitchen where the ceiling is dark green but the cans' interiors were left white (since they weren't supposed to show).
I am going to find out if anyone makes an indoor CFL floodlight in daylight white; keep your fingers crossed for me. :-)

I know Sylvania makes daylight CFLs, because I’ve bought’em

@mpmarus – right, but remember I have those huge recessed cans to fill. Cleaning it up and moving on is what gets done around here. We have people and animals who live in the areas where breaks have occurred and so far, no two-headed kittens

@Judie – all I can say is, like bitbank, we’ve been using CFLs around here for a few years, and have had a few break. We use CFLs throughout the house here, for a number of reasons, notably heat (just the thought of incandescent bulbs during the South AL summer makes me sweat!) and while I try to be aware and lessen my impact on the environment, I could mail burnt-out CFLs to IKEA for less than the cost of a comparable LED bulb - yikes!

I know Sylvania makes daylight CFLs, because I’ve bought’em <img

If you drop and break a CFL, would you feel any concern? Lowes sells 18W CFL floodlights for $14 a pair that have a nice color and are quite bright. You can also get a 4-pack of 14W CFL floodlights at Costco for $12. I've replaced all frequently used incandescent floodlights with CFLs and they are definitely saving energy and heat. A few died within days of installation, but Lowes was good about replacing them. I've been using CFLs in regular lamp fixtures for the past 7 years and they do last a long time.

The LED bulbs don’t really make sense yet. I am going to see if I can find something brighter (whiter) for the kitchen that still fills the recessed lighting receptacles. I hate the darkness in the kitchen, too - I like things bright and cheery, especially where food is involved! :-)
Your idea of moving the CFLs currently in the kitchen to the hallway is an excellent one! :-)

@mpmarus – I have to go to Home Depot to replace that CFL which had burned out today, anyway.

I am going to see if I can find something brighter (whiter) for the kitchen that still fills the recessed lighting receptacles. Maybe replace some of your lights and see if you notice a difference in your bill...and if warranted, do them all. :-)

@Drew – I think that LED is definitely the way to go, you just have to get past that initial (hideous) sticker shock. <img

Yeah, I guess I found that out the hard way. The problem is that if you stick "150 watts" on a bulb, the average consumer (in this case, me) is going to take it at face value, thinking that they are buying a CFL that offers a similar watt equivalent to incandescent.

The 150 watt CFL you show in the picture is a 3-way bulb.
