Wayne: I’m not sure if this will work for everyone or if it’s just allowing me in because I’m already into the Evernote beta (I think it’s an open URL because one of my friends was able to download directly). UPDATE: Some users are not able to get into the beta via the link shown at the end of this post – if you have trouble – leave a note in the comments and I’ll forward you an invite from my account.
Instead of applying for the Evernote Beta (which is just a marketing gimmick imho) — keep reading and I have a link that I found which seems to get you into the beta without having to wait for an invite.

This software has clients for Windows, MAC, Mobile — and the sync happens automatically over the web.
I have some privacy related questions about syncing things over an insecure connection – but my notes are not so earth shattering that it would stop me from downloading. However if you store things like passwords and other sensitive information I’m a little iffy on the secure-nes.
Doug Goldring: I don’t think you can download the Evernote Web beta 3 from there. Just the offline tools, which are not part of the new Beta (though I will say the Windows Mobile tool is excellent).
I agree with you about privacy concerns. But really, what I am using it for is pretty much jotting stuff down when I get an idea on a post and can’t get to the computer right away.
Wayne: Since I’m already signed on I can’t really test whether it works unless I create another account.
One of my friends was able to download what looked like the client — and I downloaded the MAC client on my MacBook Pro without having a copy of Evernote (or login info there) — and it installed. Once I put in my Evernote login and PW it sync’d me right up.
I believe if you were to download this and you did not have an account already that it prompts you to create one.
Once you have the account you should be able to log in online via the beta page – — which is openly displayed on their home page.
Cool software. I wish I had more confidence in the security because I think that’s going to hold me back from using it heavier than just for simple notes as you are doing as well.
Doug G: Yeah, I don’t know, Wayne. I know that the offline clients were not part of Beta 3, that was just the web based upgrade.
Either way, it is pretty cool if you use a lot of notes from different locations. But I agree iwth Wayne, I am not about to put my bank account info up there.
Wayne: What I use it for is random note taking – and then synchronizing those notes to my work, home and laptop.
I started to find that while I was in the office I’d take notes on a scrap of paper. Then I’d leave — and forget the paper. Now I’m home. Damn – the paper with the notes are back in my office and I need the info for tomorrow.
What Evernote brings to the table is a central place for notes that I can easily search.
There are other options — I think Google has a notebook of sorts – but searching and adding information seemed clunky.
The web notes make me nervous, especially since some of the notes that I may take during the day involved confidential client information like passwords, etc.
It’s worth a look but only if you have the need to centrally organize a lot of notes and have them sync. I’ve never tried the photo stuff where they say if you insert a picture with writing Evernote will read within the photo. Evernote also has a cool web clipper where I have clipped and added pages from web sites — usually receipts when I’ve ordered something.
Not earth shattering but very useful in the right situation.
Doug G: I agree Wayne. I would say that if you are someone who takes a lot of notes, particularly electronic notes, then this is a fantastic option. Otherwise, it is just a cool toy.
Wayne: I put in a request for some beta invites (even though I think a direct link would get people in) and I’m waiting to hear back from Evernote…in the meantime I think http://www.evernote.com/support/beta/ works and bypasses having to request a beta invite which is nothing but marketing gimmickery in my opinion…

No luck with just using the link. They let you download the app, but you can’t create an account. Looks like we’ll need the invites after all. I’d meant to download the client when giveawayoftheday.com was offering it, but forgot about it until the next morning. By that time it was too late.
Kind of looking forward to the ability to sync desktop and mobile. That’s something sorely missing in a lot of apps today.
March 28th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
I just sent you out an invite to the beta.
Anyone else needing one – leave a message in the comments and I’ll send an invite.
March 28th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
The local clients are part of the beta. Before the beta, there was only the Windows client. The beta adds the web component, and clients for the other platforms.
I agree about the lack of encryption for the syncing between the client and the web service, but looking at the release notes, it seem like they are working on encrypted notes. You can always set a notebook to be not sync-ed with the web service.
The OSX client requires an account, but I do not believe the Windows client requires one.

Hi. I would like to have an invite to Evernote.
Thank you.
March 28th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Wayne & Doug, I just looked and I have 10 invites, too – if you need more just let me know.
March 28th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
It was hard for me to tell whether the link allowed you to create an account on your own or whether it really required an invite.
When I downloaded on my MBP it created the Mac client and prompted me to either login to an existing account or create a new one.
Am not sure if the Windows download is different in terms of allowing you to create an account.
@RuiMDuarte – Sent invite

I’d like to give it a whirl too…when you get a chance.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
I d/led this when iirc giveawayoftheday offered it, but the web syncing option is greyed out. Is this the case for anyone else?
March 29th, 2008 at 5:31 am
@Victore – sent invitation this AM
@JDTagish – sent invitation this AM
@Chris Magnusson – am not sure on the greying out issue – I sent you a beta invite just in case that was the “missing piece”
I just tried to setup a Windows Vista copy of Evernote and as originally noted in the comments it stops me from creating an account.
It redirects to:
http://www.evernote.com/prereg/
Unfortunately when I initially discovered you could download the beta of Win and Mac — I did not test whether I was able to create ANOTHER account — I just saw there was an “add an account” button and I mistakenly assumed it would work. My bad. Looks like if you’re not in the beta you have to roll through the application process.
I have 7 more remaining and I think Judie and Doug may have some as well. I’ve asked Evernote for a block of them but have yet to hear back.

I would love an invite to try this out.
Thanks
March 29th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Yep, I am holding on to my 10 until Wayne tells me who to send to, just to make sure that we don’t duplicate our efforts and waste an invite. Wayne, just let me know when/if.
March 29th, 2008 at 11:06 am
@Wayne – did not receive, but I updated my profile email late yesterday, because I realized that the one left in the profile was really old. Current is JDTagish (at) gmail.com.
Thanks!

I’m still not sure about the pocket pc version I wish you could view and update notes before uploading. I reason is, let say someone gives you a phone number to call, you jot it down and head on your way. Then the guy says “I forgot to give you the extension” now you have two notes one with the number and the other with the extension. Or maybe you loose signal and just want to view a note, you can’t without uploading and a connection (still that cloud problem). If they would add a way to review and update notes like the Technology Preview of EverNote for mobile devices I think it would be a winner.
Also I have 10 invites if anyone wants them.
March 29th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
love an invite to the beta thx. I’m a recent 2.2 user also using the wm tech preview & can’t wait to try version 3. Thanks in advance.
Mitch
March 29th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
@Wayne Schulz: Would you believe I had the wrong version installed?
What I did was take advantage of the full version giveaway that was offered somewhere a few weeks ago, and that version (2.2.something) did not have the syncing ready to go yet. I’m up and running with the beta on both my notebook and Treo.
March 29th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
@mitch.olson – Invite is on the way
@Chris – the versions are a bit confusing – the older version was more difficult to sync. I always used the Foldershare utility as a quick and easy sync.

I just sent an email invite to Ellen. Mike, if you would like to coordinate with Wayne so that we don’t duplicate invites, he’ll let you know when he needs help. Thank you so much for offering yours!

I have an earlier version of Evernote, and its ability to pull text out of images is amazing. I’d like to try the new beta if one of you still has invites.

By the way: nice site. I hadn’t been here before and just found it tracking down the Evernote beta.
Thanks.

April 6th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Thanks Mike!
April 6th, 2008 at 11:14 am
I have 8 left as well. Since I can’t get to my email as quickly as I’d like and to prevent dups, maybe Judie can email me with a list, and I can get them done that way. My internet access is spotty at best right now, and until my boss produces the aircard he is supposed to be getting me, it will stay sporadic. UGH!
April 6th, 2008 at 11:16 am
Thanks JD!
April 6th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Judie,
I have 10 invites as well. Would love to share them. I’ll wait for your go ahead before I send them.

One thing I have noticed when using Evernote Mobile your text notes are recognized by Word Mobile the file name shows up as the date written. The notes can be viewed and changed but the changes are not recognized by Evernote Mobile. The ink notes also are also on the device but I haven’t found a way to open them yet.
April 8th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Could you send me an invite as well?
THANKS!

thanks a bunch! I’m uninstalling FF 3 as it’s not supported by evernote yet. Can’t wait to check it out!
April 9th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
thank you so much!
April 9th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Thanks for the review and update on the beta. I would love to receive an invite as well? Do you still have some left? Thanks in advance for your help!
April 9th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
@erik, you shouldn’t need to uninstall Fx3, unless you only use their web service. If you install the local client, it comes with a clipper than will add stuff via the local client. That said, Camino is not a supported browser, but it seems to work with the web service.
April 9th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Jeff, Jerry has sent you one.
April 9th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
I’ll second that uninstalling Firefox 3 is not necessary. You get warnings that it’s not supported, but I haven’t seen any issues so far other than the large warning box each and every time I visit the page. The clipper link works okay withing FF3, the standalone windows app is fine. I think they’re just trying to cover their bases and indicate that if you do run into problems, they can’t help you if you’re running FF3. You get the same warnings for IE6.

April 19th, 2008 at 10:28 am
Since every organizer I’ve used seems to turn into a glorified snippet-collection, I’m in the market for a powerful way to handle them.
If anyone stumbles on this comment and has a sec to send an invitation (and an extra one to spare), I’d be ever-grateful (!).
My e-mail address is
cyberbryce <()> gmail.com
but with an @ in the middle!
Best,
Bryce
