Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes of the world’s two most popular gadget blogs, Engadget and Gizmodo? In an industry where having a ten-minute scoop on a particular gadget or new technology can drive thousands of additional page views, the cut-throat competition between these two power brokers is quite extraordinary to observe, as detailed in the excellent Wired article Gear Blog Rivals Engadget and Gizmodo Turn the Competition Up to 11.
And like a couple of rival hometown newspapers, Engadget and Gizmodo have seen their competition develop into a full-blown feud, complete with charges of malfeasance and sabotage. Engadget rarely links to Gizmodo, and often it’s to ridicule the site for faulty predictions; Gizmodo’s publisher, blogging impresario Nick Denton, has accused Engadget of being “amateurish” and “gullible.” “I don’t think we are nice or decent to each other,” Lam says. “There is so much animosity, so much pettiness.”
Fascinating stuff. For my part, I don’t take sides, and have both blogs in my RSS feeds - all the better to have a comprehensive insight on what’s currently going on in the gadget world. But it’s interesting to observe that the bigger a blog gets, the less inclined it is to link to competitors, which is when it stops being reader-centric and starts focussing on driving more hits internally. Which, to be fair, is difficult to avoid when the site is a commercial entity and answerable to various stakeholders that aren’t too fussed about maintaining editorial integrity.
What are your thoughts on gadget blog rivalry? (For the record, Gear Diary has no blogging blacklist and likes to get along with everybody

I am a creature of habit, but I only read Engadget. Occasionally if Gizmodo has coverage of an Apple event I check them out, but I find that the blogs tend to all cover the same articles. I read Engadget for the blast of news, and Gear Diary for the eclectic awesomeness.

I love your “eclectic awesomeness” tag; totally what we aspire to. I may have to use that somewhere, and I have you to thank for it.

Heh, anytime…happy to help coin catchphrases wherever possible.

I used to read both. I always liked Engadget more, and voted them for blog awards. Then Gizmodo pulled the tv shut off shenanigans at CES this year, and I removed them from my RSS reader and it wasn’t worth reading them anymore. Don’t miss em.

Ditto arebelspy. Gizmodo tends towards more off-color posts than Engadget and the CES stunt caused a pretty quick unsubscribe from my RSS feeds as well. As noted above, I found that the posts were nearly identical in most cases and don’t really miss Gizmodo. I do find it amusing that Gizmodo accuses Engadget of amateur behavior, though.
I appreciate the posts on Gear Diary because they typically go deeper than that “first” approach either of the other two mentioned here take. Neither of those sites tend to delve deeper into a story/product unless it’s causing a lot of buzz.
Thanks for the work you do here.

I have them in my RSS reader just to make sure I know what topics/stories are already being covered. I had Gizmodo out for a while but had to add them back to RSS so I could see if they were covering something that I contemplated writing.
Otherwise I find myself reading:
1. techmeme
2. Twitter/Friendfeed (which I think is poised to be CB Radio for Bloggers - I’m not sure either have legs beyond use by Bloggers and their groupies)
