Here are two webcams that are lots of fun to watch. One is a network of cameras smack in the middle of New York City’s Times Square – capturing all sorts of events – including New Years Eve festivities and the ball drop. The other is on top of the highest peak in the northeast – 6288′ Mount Washington in New Hampshire. Check out the links and if you time your visit just right you can watch the sun set on top of Mt. Washington – or catch the Naked Cowboy posing in Times Square.

Earthcam operates a network of 13 webcams which capture the action 24×7 in New York’s Times Square.

Without ever leaving the comfort of your computer keyboard, you can feel like a true NYC tourist!

Is any visit to Times Square complete without a picture with the Naked Cowboy. This guy actually makes a living posing for tourists right smack in the middle of the tourist district. If you stop to take a photo, one of his partners will politely remind you that it’s $ 2 even if you don’t want to pose with the cowpoke. You’ll frequently see lines of people on the web cam waiting to pose with the Cowboy as he stands in the center island of Times Square.

Here’s the New York Times Square Web Cam – 46th and Broadway:

The web cams broadcast live 24 x 7. Because I travel to NY often on both business and pleasure – I’ve gotten used to viewing the web cam before I leave the house so I know what the weather is like in the city. When people are walking by with coats and umbrellas – I know to dress warmly and bring my rain gear.

If you take a trip into New York, be sure you stop at 46th and Broadway. You’ll see many tourists waving and talking into cellphones to friends who are watching via the cam. The cams also have an archive so you can look back over the last 24 hour’s pictures and spot yourself.

Instead of freezing outside waiting for the ball to drop in Times Square – you can watch it all happen live on the Times Square web cam – or browse their archive of the festivities!

If a quiet change of pace is what you’re in the mood for, climb to the top of Mt Washington in New Hampshire and watch the sun rise – all without leaving your chair.

The Mt Washington Observatory has several views – all free via their Observatory web cams:

If you’re using a Mac, you can also navigate to the web cams above and make each photo into a widget. I find the views of Washington and New York City are interesting to watch during my free time. Enjoy!
