Various Blackberry forums are starting to spotlight screen shots of the soon to be released version 4.50 Blackberry operating system (including the photo above via Howardforums). Most of what’s being added is rather ordinary. But there are some nice additions like Documents to Go which will appear at no cost for devices like the Curve or 88xx series. More details on the next page.
Perhaps the most useful update is the addition of Documents To Go to the core list of applications that are expected to ship with certain Blackberry models using the OS version 4.5.

PC Magazine ran a great article two months ago that provided information on what each device could expect to receive when OS 4.5 is released (date as of yet unannounced):
The major upgrades for those on a Pearl (81xx), Curve (83xx) or 8800 are:
Spell check
Improved maps
Voice notes
Better media player
Bluetooth stereo music
HTML Email
Over the air device upgrades
Some Blackberry models already sport the above features, this OS upgrade is expected to bring everyone to a similar feature set. Several of the release features will require an upgraded Enterprise Server (aka BES) or Internet Service (aka BIS) — so you may have to wait a few months for the carriers and your IT department to upgrade their internal software to support the newest features.

A few months? I wish! Where I work, it’ll be several YEARS, if ever. (Probably never.)

Man, why does Blackberry have to hit everything SO HARD with the ugly stick?!?
They wonder why things like the iPhone are gaining popularity…

I totally agree. In my opinion (and I’m a long time Blackberry user/fanatic) Blackberry has hit what I call their “market top”.
From here on in it’s all downhill.
Their browser is poor, they still require the archaic extra fee for BIS or BES (watch this go away when the iPhone adds Exchange support).
The whole issue of push email is not really anything new or technically difficult anymore. I think that the idea of Blackberry demanding a premium for their devices is quaint and within about a year I think we’re going to see them start to head downhill in terms of market share rather quickly.
