I Feel Like I Have Pushed My Baby From the Nest…and He FLEW!

Posted on 16 April 2008 by

Many of you have heard me talk about my special relationship with Mitchell Oke; he and I have been friends since he was 11 or 12, and I consider him to be one of my kids…even if he is all the way around the world. He means a lot to me, and so perhaps you will understand the pride I feel as I give you a peek at this – his first article in a printed magazine. Let me clarify, he got paid for this. Mitchell is now a published and paid freelance journalist, at age 18. How cool is that?! :-D

The magazine is APC, a popular Australian monthly, and his article was published in the May issue. With the simple title “Western Digital GreenPower WD1000FYPS”, Mitchell leaps from the internet into print…

If you happen to be in Australia, do pick up a copy of APC. I’ve told you before that Mitchell was going places, and you had better believe I meant it. I predict that he will be a noted product reviewer one day for a major news venue…Walt better watch his job. ;-)

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

How cool is that? Very, very cool – but not very surprising. I agree with you that it’s obvious Mitchell should and will go far. He writes some of the most memorable pieces here at GD, and has done some great videos too.

    Good on ya Mitchell …

Hey my avatar finally shows up – yay. My dog will not go far I’m afraid, but he’s a damn fine avatar :)

    Mitchell this is great!!

His writing is the reason I’ve got an iMac and MBP sitting here in front of me. He has a great way of framing things he’s enthusiastic about without coming off hyping them.

This is only the first step Mitchell- now that you have one of these print things under your belt more and more follow.

Good job mate, throw another shrimp on the barbie — are whatever it is they say in Australia.. :-)

SWEET! Mitchell, I was starting to think it’s been a while since you edited your profile on here, but I guess you still are 18! :D

    Keep it going mate!

    Congratulations Mitchell!

Mitchell made me look at Apple products. He was the typical PC bloke but gave a fair run to the MacBook and other things he reviewed. I followed his lead and fell under the charm of Apple’s platform too.

I still remember rushing off from the research center to buy a Touch after Mitchell answered some of my questions by email.

Oh and Wayne, we say prawn in Australia ;) Speaking of which, I need to shop for a new barby! I can’t wait to put a rack of lamb on the grill because the snow is melting fast this week! (Sorry, changed the subject!)
