Q.: Judie,
Hope this note finds you well. I need some gadget advice, if you have the time. I have a birthday coming up in two weeks, and my wife wants a suggestion from me for a present. I am thinking about a new phone. I have a Samsung Blackjack for work which runs Mobile 5.0 and I like it a lot. Works very well with our Outlook Exchange server. I also have a Motorola RAZR2 for weekends, which I also like, but I’d like a weekend phone that has a little more functionality.
I have looked at the N95, but if I am going to put that kind of dent in my wallet, I wanted to see if you have a favorite fun phone that you like and would recommend for a GSM system (I am AT&T). Anything that really makes you smile?
Thanks for your time!!
Bill
A. Hi Bill,
I took a bit longer to answer your email than I had meant to, so let me start by telling you HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Let me go find my party hat…
[For those who haven't been privy to Bill's and my emails since, he told me that he still hasn't purchased a new phone, so at least my reply will still be relevant.]
Let’s dive in!
Alison (from Astraware) and I have been talking about a new Nokia that you might be interested in. Don’t get me wrong - I really like the N95, and if I were splurging I might even go for the N95 8GB, but take a look at the Nokia N82. She just got hers, and she loves it! Conveniently enough, Astraware is now producing games for the S60 platform, too. And we all know that Astraware games are a perfect weekend diversion.

According to Alison, this phone took everything about the N95 that was good, but made it better; looking at the spec sheet, I would have to agree. But bets of all, I think you might even be able to buy one for less than the N95. The black looks especially nice, but it is not as easy to find.

As far as other phones that make me smile right now? Here are four more…
1. What better weekend phone is there than the iPhone?
It’s got a fun interface, a fabulous browser, a passable camera, and is so insanely popular that just about any accessory you could imagine or want for it is available. If you don’t mind waiting a few more months, then the 3G model we keep hearing about should be here.
Now obviously people who live in the middle of nowhere (like me!) might not necessarily need (or want) to wait, but I bet there will be some other tweaks that might make it worthwhile. Maybe more memory, maybe true GPS, maybe…I dunno! But it’s fun to speculate, isn’t it?
2. The Sony Xperia X1 is a phone I have been drooling over since pictures first started emerging. Dieter, over at WM Experts got some face time with one, and I have to say that it looks pretty impressive. He lists its specifications as:
I totally agree with him when he says that “they are, in short, nothing less than top of the line.”
And for those who think it’s going to be a chunky monkey, take a look at this picture Dieter snapped of the Xperia next to a Samsung Blackjack II. Most of us have seen those, and we know they aren’t that big; yet it manages to make the X1 look tiny. Me likey.
I know this isn’t really a “weekend” phone, but the X1 looks like a phone that you could use during the week, but that you could still enjoy on the weekend! So whatever it’s going to cost, it’s a bargain if you look at it like that…right?
That’s how I am going to justify it when it comes out, anyway.Â
3. The HTC Touch Dual is about to show up stateside, possibly only on T-Mobile, possibly unlocked from BestBuy Mobile, I’m really not sure yet. You may recall that I took a look at both the HTC Touch and the Touch Dual back in December, and I absolutely loved the way the Dual felt in my hand. I did miss having a full keyboard for texting, but that’s not going to be a hang-up for everyone. If you want a more powerful than average “weekend” phone, then look no further. The cool thing is that the US version will be running the slick new WM 6.1, too.
As I said back in December, “now that it is available, I think that the Touch Dual is going to be even better received [than the Touch] - except by those who object to its slightly thicker body. In my opinion, the only thing that might have improved the Touch Dual’s form factor would have been if it could have somehow had a full QWERTY keyboard without sacrificing thickness or adding much more width. If I had to choose one over the other [Touch Dual vs. Touch], this would definitely be it. Add GPS and WiFi, and I think a lot of people would consider the Touch Dual a nearly perfect mobile phone.”
4. Last but not least, don’t forget the Google phone! HTC is coming out with a device running Android, and by all accounts it will be called the “Dream”. Vincent at Phone Magazine found and posted a video of an early prototype running Android; he says “The HTC Dream will include many of the iPhone features, such as the full touch screen interface and keyboard. It is expected to measure 5-inch long and 3-inch wide. According to AllHeadLineNews, there will be a keyboard below the screen.”
Vincent also says that “the HTC Dream may or may not resemble [the device in the video]; it’s hard to say. I’m willing to be the farm that it’ll be pretty darn close.” I welcome the opportunity to try a new type of device on a brand new platform; I can’t wait to try it.
Okay, there’s five phones that I think are cool right now. Can you all think of any that are worth a mention?

I’ve been through some variation of all the ones you mention Judie and here’s my .02 — (and remember when the iphone first came out I nearly peed myself laughing to think people were going to pay money for that — and now it’s my main phone, my house has an iMac and MacBook Pro — so just because I make a negative observation doesn’t mean I wouldn’t eventually change my mind and try different technology).
Nokia - Cool - I like that streaming video services like Qik seems to be centering a lot of cool stuff around that platform. From what I’ve seen Qik is a service that allows those with Nokia phones to stream live video from the phone to the web. I’ve given a really quick thought to getting a Nokia only for that purpose. My last Nokia was an N73 I bought off the Internet. It was cool but ultimately I couldn’t find much to hold my interest long term. When it broke and refused to boot up I was kind of happy.
Then Judie made her famous Mogul unboxing video and soon I was using the Sprint Mogul. That was my main phone for several months. I loved the synch to Exchange (just like your Samsung will do) and I thought the phone was pretty steady. Long term I didn’t care for the flip and the keyboard was tough to make a lot of progress with. I still have the Mogul on my kitchen shelf.
For day to day I carry two phones:
Blackberry 8320 which is my main emailer. It’s a great email phone. Unfortunately the browser stinks.
For everything FUN I LOVE my iPhone. For a rock solid 4 months i made fun of anyone who used one. I didn’t see them out in public that much and took that as an opportunity to email my buddie Mark about how dubious I was about their usability.
Then I bought one. The main reason I made the purchase was because I had purchased an iPod Touch on a whim at Costco. The Touch is an iPhone without the Phone. I loved using the Touch on my home WIFI and suddenly I wanted to be able to take it everywhere with me — so I convinced myself to pick up an iPhone.
Now the phone goes with me everywhere. It is my alarm clock in the morning. For a out an hour while I’m waking up I review the news of the day. All on the fantastic web browser. This web browser blows every other mobile browser out of the water.
For a while the jury was out on how well I could type with the iPhone. I’m still not perfect but I’m getting accurate enough where the last few weeks I’ve given serious consideration to using the iphone as my ONLY phone and canning my Blackberry.
So far I’ve resisted going solely iPhone because I find the implementation of Google Mail on the iPhone to be quirky. Some days it can take forever to retrieve an email (via imap — which is NOT push) and other days it works perfectly. I haven’t seen a stable enough email retrieval pattern on my iPhone. If the email was a little more consistent in speed and reliability of retrieval I’d probably throw my Blackberry in the trash.
When you talk “weekend fun” — in my opinion you are talking iPhone — and believe me I thought I’d be the last person on earth to ever utter those words…

Wayne, I think the transition you just described is what every iPhone owner who wasn’t already a Mac user (and sold on the idea of using a phone that matched their computer) has gone through. Once true Exchange is added to the iPhone, lines are really going to blur between weekend phone and true business device.

Well a phone that I’ve had my eye on for a while was the LG Viewty. I really like that phone. It has a 5 mp camera and records video at 120 fps and you can upload the videos to youtube. But I think it’s only a tri band phone and so it’s lacking the 850 mhz band. I don’t understand why LG can never just add the extra band. The phone also has 3G, but it’s only on the 2100 mhz band so you can’t use AT&T’s 3G network and I’m not sure if you need the 3G for the uploading to youtube, but I’m pretty sure you do. But of course like Judie said if you don’t live an area with 3G it might be worth the look.

Considering what Bill is asking for, the N95-NAM, N95 8GB-NAM, and ATT Tilt would be your best bets. US compatibility with 3G gives the versatility, and the rest is a matter of having a small yet powerful device. The N95 is plenty stylish IMO.

Judie:
I made my decision on the phone. Being the semi-geek that I am, I put together a spreadsheet so that I could compare them. After doing this and spending a little time doing the research, I bought a phone - actually sooner than I thought I would. Here is what I did and why - sharing it is the least that I can do given the incredible answer that I received from you on my question about phones that make you smile (the Vertu, was NOT on my list - so sorry - ha!).
Here are the material differences to me between phones:
HTC Touch Dual
No wi-fi, no GPS, bu-bye
Maybe later with a US version
(I went and tried one, it DOES feel nice in the hand)
SE Xperia X1
Very cool, not out yet
Only 3.15mp camera
No infrared port
No FM radio
No HSCSD
Like $1,000ish on preorder
Truly a world phone for GMS and UMTS
I don’t think so - maybe after it’s out for a time
Do like the keyboard build tho - nice
Nokia N82
Liked the specs very much
No infrared port
Super camera w/Xenon flash
Bothered by Euro only UMTS (when I can get a phone with US 850/1900 UMTS)
Candybar style (sorry, but I don’t like that form factor much)
Compared very well to N95 8GB
Really close, almost
Apple iPhone 3G
Out soon (we think) but not an issue for me - not worth the wait
Love my iTouch, but don’t like the form factor for a phone
I use Macs all the time, and EVERYONE has this phone-w/more to come (sorry)
It does have the best browser - OS X rocks
Nope, not today
Maybe a 3G for $199 just for fun, if that price point holds up, why not??
Google Phone
Pie-in-the-sky (for now)
Nokia N95 8GB
Got the price down to $579 and bought it
Love it so far - slider is solid
Unlimited MediaNet for $15 bucks a month on AT&T, not bad
Screams on the ‘net
It does everything
Biggest surprises: stereo speakers are excellent & easy sync with iTunes
Biggest irritation: keypad lock is a bit of a pain, but you need it w/slider phones
ARJWright was on the money. That’s where I am. Thanks again for your help. This was fun!

Bill, I am happy you finally found something that you are happy with!
