Kudos to Nurhisham Hussein at Pocket PC Thoughts for catching that Mobile01 has published their preview of the elusive 16GB HTC Advantage X7510. This is the Windows Mobile device that most excites me at the moment, because I still miss the first generation Advantage I sold last fall in anticipation of the Shift – which I never bought. Go figure.
Nurhisham summarizes that “Along with some changes to the fascia (less buttons, no joystick), 16GB onboard flash memory, TouchFlo, a haptic keyboard, and WM6.1 – all of which we knew about – the preview drops the welcome news that the new Advantage will have USB2.0 connectivity and automatic screen orientation (you know, just like a certain Apple device).”
Those of us who can’t read Chinese can view the fabulous pictures in Mobile01’s HTC X7510 preview at their site, and then switch over to the (more or less) translated version to read their impressions.
On top of the cosmetic changes and internal improvements, it looks like the camera might also have been tweaked. I don’t know how well it will serve for reading eBooks without the joystick, but I’d love the opportunity to find out. Unfortunately, I’ve been told that the X7510 uses the same Qualcomm chips which have been in the middle of litigation since last year; I just don’t know if the X7510 will ever be available here. :sigh:
Ah well, in the meantime enjoy Mobile01’s eye candy.

I thoroughly love using the HTC Advantage 7501 and find myself using it as a UMPC device more than anything. I was looking forward to the next release and was hoping for more storage (it has that), updated keyboard (it has that), keyboard backlight (nope), and the latest OS (it has that). However, I notice they got rid of the EXCELLENT upper left joystick and that is a huge error IMHO since I use that baby all the time to navigate on the device. I really don’t see much that compels me to upgrade since the 8GB Microdrive currently performs quite well with little lag and zero heat production. The haptics keyboard seems cool, but when I tried the T-Mobile variant at MWC the keys were not as distinguishable as they are on the current keyboard. The Advantage is a wonderful device and I would jump on this one if I wasn’t already using the 7501 model.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to upgrade to WM 6.1 and that is what the T-Mobile representative stated at MWC. If not, there is always XDA-Developers, right?

Yeah, it is porn! I just don’t understand dumping the joystick, though. :-/
Naughty Matt! Actually, Aura Mae has already upgraded her 7500…

I’m so spoiled by the iPhone browser that I expect other browsers would leave me disappointed.
April 28th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
The iPhone browser is tough to beat…too bad there isn’t a Safari browser for Windows Mobile!
April 28th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
The browser in WM6.1 is IE so that will help things. Is it a Safari beater? Uh, no. Is it better than PIE. Uh, yeah!

Clinton, is it the new 6.1 browser that was in Vincent’s video with Derek? If so, it will be a huge upgrade…although still not quite Safari.
April 28th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
yes it is… way better eh?

For sure!

Everyone was excited about the new Opera browser for the 7510, but I can’t quite get the hang of it. The scrolling on the WM 6.1 IE is nice. I find I prefer NetFront.

Hey, why doesn’t my avatar show up?
April 28th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Hmmm – you’ve created one at http://www.gravatar.com, right? If so, then it should show (and I’m not sure what the problem is). If not, then go!

hmmm. OK. let’s try again. If it doesn’t work now, it’s because my Gravatar is linked to my blog id getsomehairapy and here I am aura mae. Ah, Wordpress. Such smooth integration.

There you are! Gravatar links to your email address (not blog), so as long as you use one that you’ve registered with them, you are good.

Well I just sold my Shift today.. Can I let the results burn in my pocket until this thing actually ships to Australia!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
I doubt it Drew! You probably already have your eye on something new!

I actually don’t have anything in mind.. Was going to sell my iMate 9502 and go back to the TYTYN II! Maybe I should hold out!

BTW this Gravatar thing is kind of cool!
April 28th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
I would hold out – you should be able to get the Advantage in Australia without any problem…I think.

Actually can’t get the Advantage currently in AU..
Maybe the 7510 will make it, if not back to Amazon timed to one of my return trips..

The iphone browser is nice, but it is no longer (or will soon no longer be) unique. On my MotoQ I am testing Skyfire, now in beta, and it does what the iphone browser does, render full web pages. I had tested Microsoft’s Deepfish, but it was unusable, whereas Skyfire works well. Those interested should go the Skyfire site and sign up for the next beta (due out in a month or two). I think it’s scheduled for release in the fall.

I’m afraid I can’t take the credit for spotting the preview – I got the link from the XDA Developers forum. BTW, Tracy & Matt’s blog has a unboxing video that should whet your appetites even more:

Thanks Nurhisham. Consider my appetite whet.
