HP’s 31 Days of the Dragon giveaway is underway NOW! It’s your chance to win a free HP Pavilion HDX (aka Dragon) laptop each of the 31 days that the contest runs. Judie spotlighted the contest and sites offering the giveaway here. Take a minute to print out the list of sites and be sure to visit and enter each day this month. To get an idea of what HP’s new Dragon (they should have called it Elephant) looks like, take a look at Jack Cook’s article on Mobility Site. Man, this thing is honkin’ huge.

That thing makes Steve Hughes (aka FYI Guy) look tiny…and he is a normal sized man!
I bet the look on people’s faces when he carried that beast inside was priceless.

I’ve seen them in a couple of stores – guaranteed hernia if you attempt to lug that thing around, provided you can even find a bag to carry it in!

JD, I think you would need a rolling suitcase for it.

LOL – Probably the only way to get it around. To be fair though, it did look pretty cool, but more as a desktop rather than as a portable computer. But, it has all the drawbacks of a notebook (heat, etc.) and not as many benefits of a desktop (more ports, etc.) and you can’t leave it on all the time like a desktop.
I guess like the Macbook Air, it’s a niche market item. But for free, who would complain?

I certainly wouldn’t complain!

they need to show a picture of the “massive power brick”
and I suppose that one can use a suit case as a computer case for it. Lol.

Yes,that picture does make me look like a kid! (I’m 6′and 195 lbs) And thanks Judie for calling me normal, it made my day!
We were located by door at one of the few tables that had an outlet and it turned many heads and engaged many into conversation about the laptop. The two people behind us were using Toshiba Tablet PCs and had extreme gadget envy and entered Absolute Vista’s contest right there! Surprisingly the 9 cell battery lasts under “normal usage” with WiFi on around 3 hours when it uses the HP recommened power-mode and even longer if goes to sleep/suspend when not in use. Power looks to be scaled down when not plugged in. Playing a movie or kicking in the full power of those processors does net less battery life closer to 2 and 1/2 depending on what you are doing.
Finding a bag for this is pretty hard. I only had one that would fit it and it barely fit. The next best bag would have been my Heyes carry-on luggage.
It’s more of a portable workstation and it is much lighter than my first IBM “portable computer” that weighed 30lbs and had a kick ass CGA amber screen, math co-processor that I added, along with a 20MB hard drive. My Dad dubbed it my “Sewing machine”.
The HDX is way beyond that…
31 lucky people there will be. Good Luck to all that enter!

AllenThe 2.5 lb power brick is there. It is to the far left under the Panera pager and makes my DSLR look small. It is a 180W transformer with a standard PC power plug.
I will have a review of it with pictures up this weekend!

Steve, I see the brick now that you’ve pointed it out…goodness.
Email me when you have the review up so I can link.
