Mobius Seattle 2008: Day One, Second Half, MWg

Posted on 14 May 2008 by

Were you aware that O2 was purchased by eXpansys? As part of the purchase eXpansys acquired everything, and has now rebranded the company as MWg. According to their site, “Mobile & Wireless Group (MWG) is a Singapore based start-up company established to develop and market premium, converged mobile devices. Founded by the team responsible for O2’s ground-breaking range of PDA-phones, MWG will meet growing global customer demand for customized devices with an emphasis on design, technology, reliability and service.” We were led in a group session by Roger Butterworth, of MWg, who wanted feedback from us about where devices needed to go as far as usability and features. They want to focus on the design and service.

I was able to play with their new MWg Zinc II briefly last night, and I thought it was very nice. Just as the TyTN II has a solid and substantial feel, the Zinc II is the same. They passed two around while Roger was speaking, and I snapped these photos for you. :-)

The retail value will be around $700 US, unlocked. And I was one of two attendees who were chosen to take one of the devices home today, so you can expect a review soon. :megreen:

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

From where I sit (in Australia) we’ve had a fair bit to do with MWg’s previous incarnation as “O2 Asia”. Not to be confused with the large multi-national telecommunications company called O2.

When they were “O2 Asia” they had probably the worst reputation for customer support of any company I have ever heard of. I note that the staff are the same well after the name was changed.

I won’t be buying any “MWg” product anytime soon, that’s for sure.

kevinnugent, MWg is VERY aware of what happened with O2. I got the impression that they are going to work long and hard to correct O2′s mistakes, but only time will tell. :-/

Let’s see if their Customer Support staff speak and understand English for a start. Not that I’m being racist, but they should be able to make themselves understood on the phone with their customers.

Oh, and lying about devices capabilities and features doesn’t help….

We will see. It will just be from afar for me. :)
