It looks like all of you ASUS fanboys and girls may soon have even more reason to get excited; not only is there a 901 coming, but according to UMPC Fever, there is possibly a 1000 coming as well. Say Whaaa?
ASUS is looking forward to welcoming you during Computex 2008 in Taipei, Taiwan, for the ASUS’ 08 Computex Trilogy of launch events. We would also like to specially extend an invitation to you to attend the official global launch of the new Eee PCâ„¢ 901 and 1000 series.
Well, if you follow the way their numbers have gone, it makes sense, right? UMPC Fever also surmises that “The news of MSI Wind with 10″ screen are all over the world and I think Asus is reacting fast to have a surprise to us!!”
I’ve gotta hand it to all of these spunky little Linux laptops that could. I don’t think that there was ever a question of whether or not this genre would succeed, even after Wal-Mart so unceremoniously gave the Everex Cloudbooks the boot, but I don’t know if anyone thought that these Lilliputian laptops would become as hugely popular has they have. Witness how the Eee in its various incarnations has stayed consistently hard to find and continuously sold out across the country. The excitement generated by the Eee, the Cluodbook, and now the MSI Wind has been nothing short of phenomenal. I think that at least three Gear Diary Team members have an Eee, and I know that a lot of our readers either have one, want one, or have a soft spot for them.
So. A 10″ Eee…is that getting too large? Or do you think that might be just perfect?

By making it bigger and even MORE expensive, it’s not really true to the Eee anymore is it? I’m heavily considering an 8.9″ Eee at the moment for an ultraportable machine, as the improvements over the originial 7″ are worth the extra for me, but what are they going to do to this model to justify even more money? The HP 2133 looks like a better proposition if it’s going to go higher.

Mitchell, I totally agree. It is getting into regular old laptop territory. However…! If you want a Linux laptop, at this size it might be a viable option to the rather pricey ZaReason that Joel reviewed. Although ZaReason’s fabulous in-house customer service might not be there, for the amount of money you’ll save, you could afford a few tech calls.
And before Joel jumps all over me: I’m just sayin’!

Mitchell, I too sing your tune. I mean, if the netbooks(they aren’t UMPCs anyway) get this big, why not get a cheap $300 laptop then and load it with UBUNTU or similar?! I really don’t know what is their in the heads of Asus guys. I still love Asus EEE 701 and that should be the max size of a netbook

That’s exactly right, you can get a decent cheap Dell for the sort of money this thing will cost. As I said in my article a few days ago, they seem to be losing sight of the original idea somewhat.
