I take out one drive and pop the 750GB in. Unit rebuilds and yes I know still 500GB. But yay, I get another 750GB.. pop the 500GB out, unit rebuilds.. and the magic question, did it expand to 750GB or is it stuck at 500GB?

Curious to know if this unit supports expansion. i.e. two 500GB drives to begin with.. get deal on a 750GB. Even it is a RAID solution you need to remove screws if you need to change a drive and the screws are covered with stickers on top that tell you that the warranty will be void if you remove them. The drive could not be dismounted under leopard. Did not keep it for more than 24 hours and still got charged 15% restocking fee, no a god way to earn customers loyalty. (lost $106, $20 shipping x 2 + $66 in re-stocking fees)
I replaced it with a case from oyendigital.com ($114) and bought 2 x 1.5TB seagates 7200 rpm for $130 each. No shaking or rumbling, the fan is whisper quiet, the sata drives are so easy to install. Great solution, kudos to Oyen Digital. Thumbs down to OWC (macsales.com).

I bought a Guardian Maximus (1TB x 2) from Other World Computing, it shakes like an old washing machine, the fan is very loud and never slows down. Plus, before sending in for the warranty replacement... I would also wipe out the working hard drive contents.

Yeah, backing up the still good hard drive to another was exactly what I was thinking. * Two Year Repair/Replacement Warranty - In addition to NewerTech's two year warranty, the internal hard drive mechanism may be covered by up to an additional three year warranty direct with the drive manufacturer.
* One Year Warranty (0GB "Add Your Own Drive" kit)
Note: Do not disassemble or otherwise open your NewerTech storage solution prior to the conclusion of the NewerTech warranty period. Doing so will void the remainder of the NewerTech warranty.
I agree that I wouldn't want to send in my "good" drive. I'd be tempted to back it up to another and then send it in... :-P

Hi Allen, No – the hard drives are not pull out trays, it looks like they would like to do the swap on their end:

* Two Year Repair/Replacement Warranty – In addition to NewerTech’s two year warranty, the internal hard drive mechanism may be covered by up to an additional three year warranty direct with the drive manufacturer.

* One Year Warranty (0GB “Add Your Own Drive” kit)

Note: Do not disassemble or otherwise open your NewerTech storage solution prior to the conclusion of the NewerTech warranty period. Awesome that you went with the Firewire 800, its very fast compared to 400 or USB.
BTW. The metal body casing in conjunction with the fan helps dissipate heat from the hard drives. I highly recommend over plastic body external hard drives.
I noticed that the hard drives are not in pull out trays, are they?
And there is a "warranty void if opened" sticker on the back panel.
How does Newer Tech handle a failed hard drive replacement situation? I am guessing Newer Tech will want to perform the swap on their end. But, I wouldn't want to send the unit with the other functioning HD full of my stuff, you know what I mean?

Nice very detailed review Judie. <img
