BoyGeniusReport has what appear to be the first photos of the upcoming touchscreen Blackberry (aka Blackberry Thunder). While there is no clue given as to what the OS will be like (we’d have to assume that it will use a slightly modified version of the standard Blackberry OS), the photos appear at a most appropriate time for causing the maximum FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) for anyone thinking of jumping ship from the Blackberry in favor of Apple’s iPhone. As you know Apple is widely expected to unveil their more corporate friendly version of the iPhone which is rumored to include both 3G data speeds and Microsoft Exchange integration. I’m still predicting that unless Blackberry comes out with a killer browser (and I don’t mean slapping Opera into their OS as either an integration or add-on) that you should expect a steady decline in Blackberry sales .

I’m still not all that excited until I can see this thing in action.
The make or break parts of the device:
- Web browsing — Blackberry better start kicking some butt here with a much beefed up browser — and I don’t mean a cheezy requirement that I need to subscribe to BES to get a decent browser. Out of the box I want an iPhone like browser that renders the pagers like they appear on my desktop. Every single phone manufacturer has to get this right. I’ve tried Opera before and it didn’t do it for me.
- Why does the iPhone have 4 keys — and the Blackberry “TOUCH” have 9? Ok - yeah the Blackberry doesn’t have to copy everything about the iPhone, but shouldn’t the touch interface take the place of some of these hardware keys??? Is this an example of Blackberry rushing to modify their stock OS just to fit it into a touch design?
I still want to see HTML email and I want it without any requirement to subscribe to BES.
So far all the early “leaked” images and devices have fallen short at demonstrating that the next generation of Blackberry’s is anything but an incremental step forward.
These leaks are an interesting way to continue to create just enough uncertainty in the minds of potential purchasers. Now Blackberry has to live up to their leaks.
