Earlier this week I was telling the GearDiary team that the only place I buy cell phones is online via Amazon. If you can wait until the newest cell phone model hits their web site, they’re the most convenient and cheapest way to order a phone. I’ve all but given up on cell phone stores because I always seem to find the store where the people don’t know anything or I’m seven people deep in line waiting while the one clerk explains how a cell phone works. Now the Amazon cell phone store is even better. I just noticed that they offer FlipSwap which is a service that allows you to trade in your cell phone and receive an Amazon gift certificate. Let’s take a look on the next page.
I found the FlipSwap option in the lower left corner of the Amazon cell phone store home page.

The FlipSwap site provides estimates for various popular models of phones. The iPhone 8GB was listed as having a trade value of $213. A quick review of ebay auctions revealed auctions in process with prices about $100 to $150 higher for used iPhone 8GB. So the prices quoted here are not as high as what you might get on eBay – but you also don’t have to worry about that eBayer from Los Angeles who suddenly wants his phone shipped to Nigeria.

To start your trade in process, you tell FlipSwap about the model phone you own and would like to trade.

After the manufacturer information has been selected, FlipSwap gives you an estimate of what your phone is worth (in trade). These values are admittedly less than what you would get by going to eBay. Remember though, you aren’t dealing with listing your phone or dealing with non-paying bidders. For the convenience of avoiding the potential hassle of eBay you can expect to receive a bit less for your phone.

Answer a few questions about the condition of your iPhone (be honest – because they’ll check it when it’s received and if the condition doesn’t match your answers you may receive less money).

Finally you’ll receive a final quote for your phone. If you agree with the price, you can print out a prepaid USPS shipping label.

Access the FlipSwap trade in page via the Amazon cell phone store (I found the icon in the lower left corner of the cell phone store landing page). It’s a fast and convenient way to trade in your existing phone. They accept all types of phones and will even pay for the shipping for you to send in your phone.
The FlipSwap trade in can also be accessed at stores other than Amazon. Check the FlipSwap home page via the link below for more information on stores in your area that may accept FlipSwap trades.

Nice! Thanks for posting this.
I jumped the gun though; I gave mine to one of Sarah’s friends in anticipation of getting the 3G. I think he will love it, though.
