AT&T just updated their online account feature so iPhone users can confirm eligibility for an upgrade. Previously existing iPhone users who tried to verify eligibility were told they could not upgrade until the end of their initial 2 year plan. To view your upgrade status, login into your AT&T online account via http://www.attwireless.com. Then navigate to “Phone/Device” and click on the “Upgrade Phone” link. Now all we need is some clarity on the iPhone pricing.

Not that it matters here in Oz, but what’s a “no-commitment pricing option” Wayne? Like a Pre-Paid option? I thought you could only get an iPhone in the States through a 2 year deal with the devil, er, AT&T?

They have yet to unequivocally announce the no contract pricing.

“Fuzzy” pricing seems to be more the norm as the competition in the cell phone market heats up. Witness Sprint’s Samsung Instinct which only received a final price the day before the official launch.

The price will be high enough to discourage unlockers. I was in New York City yesterday and just about every storefront offered to unlock iPhone’s. Apparently unlocking is big business – and I think Apple and ATT would like to curb it as much as possible.

Yep, that’s why I was so surprised to see that “no commitment” option. They would really crack down hard on unlocking if you had to buy a plan with the phone. It wouldn’t be viable to on-sell the device then.

We, of course, are having the iPhone sold to us via Apple itself via the new Flagship Sydney store, Vodafone Australia, Optus, Telstra and possibly these phone company resellers.

We have SO much choice, none of them have released their pricing yet for fear of being the first ones out of the closet!

    It’s getting quite ridiculous now.

My wife is eligible for an upgrade, I’m not; but I don’t seem to get the same display as you do, Wayne. I must be doing something wrong, or going down the wrong path… I still don’t see the iPhone offered anywhere for me and my account yet. Oh well. If this is official, then you’re right. All we have left to get answered is the non-contract price…

Chris – maybe I get this display because I’m an iPhone subscriber. I signed up in January 2008 — so I’m definitely not “normally” qualified for any upgrade.

I’m curious whether this special “status” allows me to upgrade to ANY phone or just an iPhone….

If it’s any phone, I wonder whether people who have an iPhone but aren’t upgrading the iPhone might try scoring a cheaper phone as an upgrade and then eBaying the phone?

As the original iPhone was purchased without any subsidy, its likely that its an upgrade for any phone. I wouldn’t be surprised if those users that got an iPhone 3G this way, would then sell their original iPhone on eBay or some other list, and bank the bucks to cover the cost of the upgrade. Makes sense to me…
