Sprint is getting ready to launch their Airave device on July 15. This internet connected unit serves as a router for Sprint cellular calls. Connect the device to your home broadband connection and all of your Sprint calls will be carried over the Internet – especially handy if your house is in a fringe signal area. Of course you need an add-on plan to use the service – scheduled to be $30 for families or $15 for individuals. Inside the Airave is a GPS unit which determines whether you are using the device within a region that Sprint holds a cellular license. Don’t think you’ll bring this to the Bahamas on vacation – because unless Sprint has native coverage the Airave won’t work. Instructions on the box specify that the Airave needs to be placed near a window so the GPS can get a position fix. What’s hot about the Airave is that unlike T-Mobile’s similar UMA service – this device works with all Sprint handsets (including data and text messaging).
