In a scene that seems to be repeated yearly at this time, Digitimes is reporting that Samsung Electronics has told customers that it must start reducing the supply of NAND flash chips that it sells to them starting in July due to demands by a key customer. That key customer is Apple who according to Digitimes has placed orders for an additional 50 million 8 Gb-equivalent NAND flash chips mainly for use in Apple’s iPhone. Due to this new demand, available supply to other customers will be sharply curtailed. This report comes on the heels of a prior 25 million 8Gb NAND order that Apple received in June. Anyone want to guess what kind of discount you get on an order for 50 million memory chips?
