The mother of all press releases hit the wires this morning with the trendy news that using DiskKeeper fragmentation software can help companies reduce power consumption. According to a study by the 3D Professor (commissioned by the company), defragmenting your hard drive not only improves system performance, but it also reduces a company’s carbon footprint and consequently power costs. Their testing results claim a 12% energy consumption reduction with an approximate annual savings of $ 5,465.33 for a medium sized company with 250 workstations. Unfortunately the study fails to make any mention of what OS was used for testing. Given the way that I’ve heard some computer disks thrash, I’d say it’s a decent bet they tested on VISTA. Leading me to wonder whether a better conclusion might have been that continuing to use Windows XP leads to a reduced carbon footprint?
