Our man on the street, Wayne Schulz (he’s everywhere) just reported that the lines are beginning to form in front of the Apple Store in New York.
Wayne reports, “According to police the people began lining up this morning. Number one in line is a man and woman with a baby who’ve told the police and security guards that their goal is to set a record for time in line and possibly the first baby to wait with them (or some such nonsense).”
UPDATE:
“At about noon on July 4th while on a trip into New York City I noticed the first line forming for the 3G iPhone at the flagship Apple 5th Avenue Store in New York City. About 10 people in line with the first two being a man and woman with a young child. I talked to the security guards and New York police who will allow everyone to stay and indicated that as of yet there are no plans to put out barricades. It appears that most (if not all) of the people in line are part of some group who may be either attempting to set a record for waiting in line or gain some publicity for themselves. It’s too early to tell if this is a hoax/publicity stunt or whether these folks will stay in line through sun and rain for the next seven days”.
More photos after the break.

Update July 5, 2008:
Hard to say that these are true iPhone fans. Seems more likely to be an organized group of some sort out for publicity. When I spoke to the police and security initially they mentioned that the first people in line had said they were also going to purchase phones for Barack Obama and John McCain. This information also appears on a web site (waitingforapples) that seems to have been created by someone affiliated with the group.
Has camping out in line for Apple products taken precedent over football tickets or concerts?

Rain, heat, arse sores - I got a bad case of the iPhone 3G gotta have it now itch..
There’s no marketing buzz like a iPhone 3G buzz (with unlimited data!) *Text Messaging extra*

Update July 5, 2008:
It seems more likely that this line is some type of odd family picnic. Remember, we are in New York City!
Philip Elmer-DeWitt from Apple 2.0 has a great interview with the five people who remained in line this morning from the group - check out his article - Who would wait a week in line for an iPhone 3G?
Here’s a short tidbit from a web site that may have been created by someone associated with this crew. Part of the web site claims that the group will purchase an iPhone for Barack Obama and John McCain (which the New York Police told me was what the first people in line said to them when they lined up).
Publicity stunt anyone? Stay tuned to see if this group has anything more than Apple chomping on their agenda:

One word - RETARDED. That’s pretty self explanatory. People really should obtain a life. Poor child. I hope child services come pick this up.
July 4th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
That’s pretty crazy. 24 hours ahead of time is a bit much but understandable (sort of.) There’s no excuse for this insanity of a week ahead of time. Do they have a battery powered fan and/or a tent? They’re going to need both, since the weather report is rain, rain, heat, rain, lightning, heat. Or so says weather.com (and my bad knee!).
July 4th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Nasty… How about a shower? I’d call child protective services. This reminds me of that woman who died drinking water to win a Wii on a radio station.
THis guy is simply STUPID. Either that or just looking for a day in the news and then will pack up in a day or two.
Either way, an idiot IMHO

I’m just back from NYC where I stumbled upon these folks in line. I was told by security and the police department right off the bat that they’d talked to them and apparently there was some plan to break a record for most time in line.
It seems likely that they’re all together and who knows whether this is a giant hoax or whether these people will really stay out in the sun and rain for a solid week.
Given the enormous publicity that surrounded last year’s iPhone launch I can’t help but wonder whether this is largely a publicity stunt with more to come as the launch gets closer.
It strikes me as just too odd that suddenly a line of about 10 people forms 7 days ahead of launch.
Then again maybe someone should tell them that the phone is being released NEXT Friday….
Only in New York..
July 4th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Honestly, Wayne, if they were here in Australia the police (and public opinion) would not allow that child to be subjected to that. I’m not a wowser, but it smacks of child abuse to me.

@ Kevin, what’s wrong with a camping holiday
In Oz I don’t think we’ll see this sort of reaction, and the online awareness of the iPhone is very limited. Maybe 3G will amp it up a bit, but until it’s advertised aggressively who knows what will happen.
Did you save a place in the line Wayne?
July 5th, 2008 at 6:04 am
I’m leaning toward a publicity stunt of some type.
Here’s part of what appears to be their web site (and it seems likely to be one of their sites because the police and security at the site told me that the group was waiting in line to buy an iPhone for Barack Obama and John McCain.

Happy Independence Day!
We the people love Apples.
Apple iPhones!
The Big Apple!
Apples grown locally in New York State!
We are here on a mission to set a new Guinness World Record for “longest time waiting in line to buy something.”
Until now, there was never anything we felt excited enough to wait for a ridiculous amount of time. We can’t wait for the iPhone 3G.
As the old adage states, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” So, for the next seven days, expect to see us eating a lot of Apples, and sharing Apples with our friends. We will have local apple farmers deliver us apples every day. And as the line grows, we will give locally-grown apples to everyone waiting on line.
We are excited about the new Apple iPhone, and the Independence it will provide us. We are so excited, in fact, that we have arrived an entire week in advance of the on-sale date. Coincidence or not, we think that Independence Day is a great day to begin Waiting For Apples!
We have come from all parts of the country, and even from abroad, to set a new record for longest time waiting in line to stimulate the economy of NYC. We could have set this record anywhere, and on anything. But, we heart NYC, the Big Apple. And we love Apples grown in and near NYC. So, what more nourishing place than right across from Central Park, the “lungs” of New York City.
We will celebrate many elements of the New York City’s PlaNYC 2030 sustainability agenda:
* We will spend a lot of time in a great public space, around the clock.
* We will use mobile solar power from Solar1.
* We will drink NYC’s renowned tap water.
* We will have local healthy food (especially Apples) delivered by our community gardener friends, Greenmarket farmers, and locavore restauranteurs via bicycles and pedicabs.
* We will compost our foodscraps, to help sustain our fragile soil.
* And most importantly, we will talk to whoever happens to stop by about local organic farming as a critical element to sustainable healthy living, food security, youth education, and climate change mitigation.
We have many theme songs, among them:
The Longest Time by Billy Joel,
La Isla Bonita by Madonna,
Livin’ on a Prayer by Jon Bon Jovi,
Rockin’ in the Free World by Neil Young,
Living in the Promised Land by Willie Nelson,
Across the Universe by the Beatles and also Fiona Apple, and
Feeling Groovy (59th Street Bridge Song) by Simon and Garfunkel.
Our theme album is:
More Songs about Buildings and Food by The Talking Heads.
By the way, we are not just buying iPhones for ourselves. We will also purchase iPhones for Barack Obama and John McCain, because the world needs an American president to “think different!”
Feel free to stop by and grab an Apple!
Peace, Love, Freedom, Happiness,

Hello, people! The baby isn’t there ALL DAY and NIGHT. The mother is sensible enough not to subject her child to that. So get over the whole “bring on the child services” bit.
