Mophie’s web site is accepting pre-orders for an extended battery designed for the iPod Touch (shipping early August 2008) as well as announcing an expected September 2008 release of their Mophie battery pack designed for iPhone 3G (our review of the original here). The iPod Touch model boasts 24 additional hours of playback and 7 hours of video playback. Unlike their iPhone models, Mophie is using a USB connector for charging as opposed to the standard Apple connector. The pack is designed for 500 full charge cycles (partial topping off charges don’t count).

That looks pretty useful, although it would have made more sense to me to pass through the iPod connector.
Battery life in general is one of my biggest gripes about modern wireless devices. How wireless are you if you have to carry around a charger and look for outlets. They keep finding ways to make devices smaller; I wish they’d use some of that extra space for more battery. Every new feature that’s added uses more juice which exacerbates the problem.
Better still, design the device so that the entire back is a removable battery pack. That way you could not only swap batteries, but use an extended battery without completely destroying the aesthetics and feel. You’d also have the option to use a smaller pack when size/weight matters more than battery life.
I still look fondly upon the days when I used a REX organizer the size of a credit card that would work for MONTHS on two button cell batteries.

While I’m griping… I upgraded my Touch to 2.0 to try out the app store. I’m very disappointed that there is no provision for trying a program before buying like most every other platform has.
