Blackberry Bold and Thunder release rumors

Hot on the heels of their tepid hands-on review of the Blackberry Bold, BoyGeniusReport has this to say about the release dates of the Blackberry Bold and Blackberry Thunder:
We’ve been told that the Bold might have been pushed back yet again. What’s the whispered launch month now? September for a lot of carriers. That’s not to say it couldn’t launch sooner on a couple carriers, but that’s what we were told. It looks like there are still some problems with the radio code that have to do with network roaming, searching, etc. The Bold software has not even gone GM3 yet, and with weekly builds still coming out, there’s nothing to be shipped at this point in time.Now, what about the BlackBerry Thunder? We’ve held on to this information for a bit, but now that we’ve confirmed it with 2 independent sources, we’re ready to run with it. Here are the most confirmed Thunder dates: a huge marketing push in the U.S. starting in September, and device release in mid-October on Verizon.

I hear you on this one Wayne, kind of like “robbing Peter to pay Paul”. Not sure I can see the advantages for RIM to release two completely different devices in the same time frame. While both products are putting their money into different pots, Bold for the display quality and the touchscreen aspect of the Thunder, RIM may be undercutting themselves by offering too many options at once. Then again the Thunder may be their attempt at pulling away iPhone junkies, and the Bold appears to still be aimed at Enterprise use. Should be interesting, but I still love my 8330.

What has me concerned is that the Blackberry Bold build quality doesn’t seem that great (according to the BGR review). There also was not much that they’ve described in the review that seems different and there are NO screen shots of the browser.

I read the BGR review yesterday and completely agree. The build quality of the screen and ’so-called’ chrome edging would completely turn me off. From reading some of Kevin’s work over at Crackberry.com, it seems that RIM is putting their money on the display quality, now how good could it actually look when its muttled with scratches after about a month of use. RIM makes a quality product, and to me if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The only real issue that needed addressed is the browser and HTML email capabilities. But yes, definitely lipstick on a pig, and the Thunder may be some hairspray and rouge to boot!

Adrian, well one of the 2 has been addressed already and that is HTML email, it is enabled on BIS 2.5 and BES 4.1.5 and it does work as shocking as that may be. But as Wayne has said in the past, the Browser needs the most work of anything, if RIM can make Wayne happy then we should all be set.

BIS did address this issue, but only for the carriers that have released the 4.5 OS, which from what I think is only 1 of the US carriers but I am not sure which. Most US carriers are releasing the 4.5 OS guess when…..drum roll……sometime in either September or October. Makes for busy times for RIM.
