I haven’t got an iPhone 3G, instead I bought an Nokia E71 (review pending) and I couldn’t be happier. I did however update my iPod Touch to the latest 2.0 firmware, and have downloaded a few apps which are pretty cool. With my Touch I get all of the benefits of the iPhone, except for the ability to surf the web and make calls while out and about. Or can I?
Some of you may have heard of Joiku, but for those who haven’t it’s a small application that you load onto a Nokia phone that instantly turns it into a mobile hotspot. That’s right, you can hookup your laptop, or in this case iPod, to your phone over WiFi, no messy Bluetooth or cable connections necessary. I downloaded it to my E71 (right on the phone), and gave it a whirl today, and I have to say it works, very very well.
The setup procedure is similar to what you encounter on a regular WiFi router. You need to set an SSID, and (unless you like people stealing your data) a security code as well. Once that’s done, turn over to whatever device you want to connect, and add the network as you would any other.
Once connected, you can surf the web as normal. In my case, on my iPod. The Safari web browser works just great, as does the App Store. This setup actually one-ups the iPhone in that you can use the iTunes Store as well. Since I’m connected via WiFi, I can buy and download songs wherever I am, instantly. This is the reason I actually set this up, and it works brilliantly.
Best of both worlds really!

Nice if that works for you, but for me one of the best reasons for buying an iphone is still that I don’t need 2 devices any more. Because granted, I could in theory listen to mp3s and aac files on my sony ericsson k800i too, but I never did. Now I just have one device that is phone and iphone at once, one thing less to stuff in your pockets.

I wanted one for that reason, but it just wouldn’t work for me.
I’ve dumped a whole lot of music and podcasts on my E71 and it does quite a good job with music, and works with an A2DP headset I have laying around. Even so, it doesn’t work as well as my auto-updating iPod.
If only my iPod could sync over WiFi, I’d be very, very happy.

What’s funny is I’ve had friends that have iPhones complain about the slow loading of a video or Internet site, so I pull up WMWifiRouter (Windows Mobile equivalent of Joiku) and let them connect through my EVDO Rev A connection.
Only 1 or 2 of them have made the jump to iPhone 3G; the bump in monthly cost is keeping them away.

Mitchell, this was a timely, post, as Doug G. was looking for a similar application the other day. I am not sure which he went with, but I am glad to see that Joiku works so well for you.

Quite interesting … sadly I’m stuck on a Moto no-camera phone so I can bring it into work with me … but on the good side my company has a ‘guest’ wireless network that I can access with my iPod Touch!

Very cool! Might just work for me too.. Committing to the ‘PLAN’ is holding me up for various reasons also..
Doesn’t the HTC TyTN II have something similar built in or is that just BT PAN?

Judie - Doug went with WMWifiRouter and is using that with his Mogul. Very similar in concept … much different in price
Unfortunately it looks like this version Mitchell has only works with Nokia phones.
As for the idea - its a great one if it works for you and its what I was doing with my Touch between times when I sold my iPhone and was waiting for the 3g. For me though - I much prefer to carry only one device (I have a hard time even bringing the headphones). I HATE having stuff in my pockets and carrying around a touch and a nokia e71 (jealous by the way that thing looks hot!) would just be way too much stuff in my pockets.

So when’s the E71 review coming?

It’s started, but I’ve gotta get the Nokia 6220c out first
Hopefully less than a week.

Cool. I like the idea of yours, but personally I’m getting an iPhone 3G :P.
And talking about which… I see there an aluminum-colored keyboard… still sticking with the Macs and your MacBook Pro I see… excellent!
That reminds me… is Judie’s MacBook Pro still dead? Or has it been successfully revived?

Yup, still got the MBP, amazingly the same one I bought way back in December 06!! I’ve never been so happy with a laptop for this long, so it’s turned out to be quite an economical purchase
iPhone 3G, I’ve played with one and it’s nice, but the keyboard is the killer for me. I love the thumboard on my E71, and now I’m back to using a thumboard all the time, I don’t see myself switching any time soon. Still, I’m very much looking forward to a review unit

Hi Mitchell,
Thanx a lot for the review. I got one problem though.
I installed Joikuspot on my N95. I tried connecting my laptop to it…worked great. But,when i tried to connect with my iPod Touch, it kept giving me a message,”Unable to Connect”. Any ideas…???
Thanx a hell lot!
