Palm Channels Mark Twain- Sells 2 Millionth Centro

Posted on 29 July 2008 by

Mark Twain once said “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated” and he may well have been singing Palm’s tune.

Today Palm Inc. announced that they had sold their 2 millionth Centro. It may not be selling as well as that “other” smartphone but the Centro is clearly a hit and is doing a great job of keeping Palm in the game. The Centro made its debut in the fall 2007. It was, and remains, the smallest and lightest Palm OS based smartphone. The diminutive handheld is now available in more than 25 different countries and is available from 20 different carriers worldwide including three of the biggest US carriers. It is currently among the top 10 phones used to access the internet.

According to Palm, the Centro has reached more young adults and women than any prior Palm smartphone by offering “an affordable, simple and fun option for staying connected and doing more with their mobile phones”.

According to Palm’s senior vice president of marketing, Brodie Keast, “Consumers are ready to do more on their mobile phone, and Centro has struck a chord around the world. Centro has everything a person needs to stay connected with everyone who is important to them — and at a price point and size that make smartphones more attractive to a much wider audience.”

Without a doubt the attractive pricepoint of the Centro (it is currently widely available for under $100) has played a major role in its success and, for those who desire the Palm OS, it is clearly an attractive option.

Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him. +Dan Cohen
