There seems to be more problems than just the 3G issue I believe. My phone crashes A LOT. These are not new programs, I can run Safari on a wifi network when presto, the phone locks up or reboots to the home screen. I was led to believe that upgrade 2.1 would fix this but alas the only thing that does work is to do a reboot.
Along with Chris, I am of the opinion it is a combination of hardware and software issues.

Tim <—Standing on step ladder with both arms touching the sky.<br

I frequent an Australain Mac forum... see above. There are many cases of sub par performance in Australia too.
From what I read it's a worldwide problem, and Apple are doing an amazing ostrich impersonation. :)

<a

The iphone was on a very short list of possibilities. With all the recent stories of dropped calls and and other usability issues, the iphone is off my list completely. If I can't talk on it, I might as well get a Palm.

I will soon be upgrading from my Nokia 6682 to a newer smartphone. That being the case, I have no idea how Apple/AT&T will handle this. I am going to be watching the issue, and will respond in kind at the appropriate time.

I actually think the solution to this problem is a combination hardware/software fix, requiring either some kind of chipset retro fit, or antenna upgrade, as well as a revision to the radio ROM. The 2.0.1 update improved things quite a bit, but there are still some issues. I'm hopeful that they will be resolved soon. My AT&T rep was in trying to sell us a new AT&T mobility service and I took the oportunity to share my concern over these problems with him.
Regardless of whether it is hardware, software, or the AT&T service itself, the finger pointing needs to stop and the situation needs to be resolved.
This type of problem certainly isn't unique to Apple/AT&T. It has happened in the past as well with various phones and various carriers and it continues to be unacceptable business behaviour. Whatever happened to the concept of actually serving the customer? I normally expect much better of both these companies and I'm more than a little disappointed in both of them.

I have a 2G phone and the 2.0 update caused my service to deteriorate. I'm in Columbus, Ohio. 3G coverage, so far, seems fine.

I’m happy to report that I’ve had mine, plus 3 more iPhone 3Gs (wife, daughter, mother) with absolutely zero problems.
