If you’re using a Treo or Centro (PALM OS only) and would like to tether your laptop to take advantage of all that money spent on data plans – here’s your opportunity. Until August 17 Mobile Stream has their USB Modem on sale for $9.95 (normally $24.95). This bests competing product PDANET by a solid $25. The setup of this software is simple. Load it to your compatible device and attach a cable between the phone and your laptop. Surf the web without any annoying extra monthly “phone as a modem” data charge (you still pay the regular phone data charge).

USB Modem – Normally $24.95 – now $ 9.95 (until 8/17)

Sprint charges extra for tethering. Can they not tell what you’re up to? I thought they monitored for this somehow.

I did this with my old Sprint Mogul and regularly was able to get 800k download – by comparison my dedicated Verison Broadband Connect card maxes out at about 1.2 mb — with more typical speeds in the 750-850k range.

Is it allowable under your contract? probably not.

    Can the carriers find out?

I have been told no. But my guess is if you suddenly are downloading 5 GB of data per month someone is going to notice. As a backup Internet connection I think you’d be ok.

    Just my .02 — ymmv

Thanks Wayne – looks like the offer has been extended until 8/21.

    Wayne,

Thanks. I went ahead and got it. For $10 it’ll be worth it even just to use in a pinch. My new plan with Sprint includes Sprint TV, so if they ever ask I’ll just say I’ve been watching a lot of TV! ;-)
