We Get Mail: Inexpensive LED Flashlight Done Right

Posted on 18 August 2008 by

L e x just sent in a tip which may come as really good news to anyone who wants a good LED but isn’t willing to shell out the dough for one of the more pricey versions. Take a look…

A well made LED flashlight has finally come to the common person without requiring a huge bank withdrawal. (I’ve never understood $100+ mini flashlights anyway.)

Energizer is making two versions of a 1 watt LED light available now at Target. One is about 5″ long and requires two AAAs, the other uses a single AA and is 4″ long. I bought the AA model. Has a tail-cap intermittent or full-time-on pushbutton switch. Black aluminum, very sturdy, o-ring at tailcap, rubber switch cover.

Target had these for under $18. Nice pocketable (or purse-able) size, lots of light, common battery, low price.

Thanks,

L e x

I started Gear Diary on September 30, 2006, and my goal was that this not be an easily labeled site. We all have gear that we use daily – some of it electronic and some of it organic. I think it is fascinating to explore the equipment that makes our lives easier, more entertaining, more productive, and more manageable. My hope is that Gear Diary visitors will find this site to be a comfortable and friendly place to discuss interesting topics – and not only those that are tech related, as well as a location to discover various types of gear – whatever that term may end up implying – that they never knew existed. My specialty is in-depth reviews written in a layman’s terms, because everyone can understand technology, sometimes it just takes a little translating. +Judie Stanford

With a list price of about $30, this is THE brightest flashlight you can buy. 1 Watt brighter than the multi-hundred dollar military spec units and this thing is built well. Is absolutely blinding if you into it.

I bought a no name version of this about a year ago from my local mom and pop electronics store. It cost about $12 and has been reliable and very useful. Mine is powered by three AAA batteries.

I forgot to mention the lifetime warranty. Also with a week’s use, no flicker in any position or situation.

Update: About a month after purchase the light started to not come on when the switch is pushed to momentary on or full-on. It also sometimes flickers when on. I’m returning it now with a letter, taking advantage of the lifetime warranty.
