I never (and still don't) have a clue --- but am amazed at the amount of stuff that I have picked up about writing and formatting for online. Also, as a byproduct of doing a lot of writing - you'll do twice as much reading of product sites, other blogs, etc. This makes you a great source of entertainment at family gatherings as you'll be able to launch into 20 minute dissertations about the applications or hardware that you've been reading/writing about....I catch myself doing this all the time (laying out the latest product offerings from Palm or Apple along with what's good or bad about them). Even if you don’t aspire to be a good writer – this is an excellent way to learn about WordPress and all the behind the scenes stuff that goes into writing.
